This invention relates to gaskets for use in connection with bottles or bags, being par: ticularly adaptable to the closures for hot water bottles or ice bags.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a gasket or sealing means to be used upon hot water bottles or ice bags. of such character as to be a permanent part thereof and thus obviating the possibility of. the gasket becoming detached or lost. j

A further object is to providea gasket possessing all the advantageous qualities of the now commonly used ring washer, and possessing the additional advantage of more securely sealing the container with which it is associated.

Still further and particular objects reside in the provision of a washer or gasket of simple and inexpensive construction, which may be easily applied to the neck of the container with which it is to be used, which is so associated with the bottle or bag neck as to overcome the possibility of accidental detachment or loss, which adds u to the general appearance of the bottle or bag with which it is used, and which will prove highly practical and efficient in use.

IViththese objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in, the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully descrlbed hereinafter, lllustrated in the drawings, and

particularly pointed out in the claim.

As heretofore practiced, the sealing of ice or hot water bags has been through the instrumentality of an ordinary rubber ring interposed between the outer flange of the bag neck and the cap of the container. By reason of the fact that such gaskets are independent of the cap and bottle neck, they frequently become misplaced or lost, thus rendering the bag useless until another gasket of proper size and quality is provided. In most instances where ice caps or hot water bags are required, urgency precludes the expenditure of time to find or construct a gasket which will eflectively seal the receptacle, and therefore resort has been made to, improvised and'inefi'ective sealing mediums asa substitute for. the proper gasket. The

imary object of the presentv The gasket of my invention consists in an H annulus or ring 4 of rubber or other similar suitable material ofa size to properly fit between the bottle neck and the sealing cap, and to be compressed between the latter and the said neck. This gasket has depending from its outer edges a skirt or apron represented at 5. This skirt is preferably formed integral with the gasket 4, andis of rubber or other contractile material. The skirt 5 is so formed as under normal conditions to be of substantially less diameter than the exterior surface of the neck of the bottle or bag, so that in applying the same to the bottle neck it is necessary that the skirt be stretched or expanded over the rim and held stretched by the neck of the bottle. The skirt is thus tightly compressed and held upon the bottle neck, and the gasket connection with a bottle or bag closure employing the screw capclosure, it is obvious that the same may be as effectively used with other types of bottle or bag closures.

It will be noted, that the apron or skirt 5 is of substantially the same depth as the neck 7 of the bottle. In practice, the skirt and gasket may be of the same color as the covering for the bottle vor bag, so that the neck portion and the body will be of uniform appearance. The outer edge of the gasket passes over the flange or rim 11 and thus maintains the same unexposed. It is preferred that the gasket portion 4 be slight- 1y thicker than the apron portion of the device, so as to possess a higher degree of compressibility. This insures proper sealing of the bottle when the cap has been drawn tightly down upon the neck portion.

The gasket thus constructed and applied forms a permanent part of the bottle neck. As before stated, it is necessary that the skirt or apron be stretched over the flange 11 and-moved downwardly until it smoothly grips the annular face of the bottle neck. The resiliency of the skirt thus tightly main tains the device properly positioned upon the bag neck and also holds gasket portion 4 in proper position to be engaged by the cap 10. The cap may be removed in the usual manner but the gasket alwaysremains properly positioned upon the bottle neck and thus held against accidental detachment or loss.

While the above is a description of the invention in its preferred embodiment, it

is apparent that slight variations therein may be made if desired without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the claim.

Having thus described my invention,

I claim:

The combination with a bottle neck having an outwardly projecting flange disposed substantially at right angles to the neck and a' stopper for insertion inthe neck and having a flat portion overlying said flange; of a gasket comprising a flat ring of pliant material of substantially the same breadth as said flange and adapted to lie upon the latter and to be compressed by said flat portion, a channel portion toreceive the outer edge of said bottle neck, and a skirt extending'beneath said flange; said gasket having its channel and skirt portions of slightly less diameter than said bottle flange and neck respectively, -whereby to snugly embrace the latter upon its top, bottom and outer edges.
