This invention relates particularly to an edge-planer adapted to the purpose of plan ing the edges of doors, windows, etc.
As is well known, doors and windows, or
frames thereof, ordinarily are made in sash and door factories. Usually, they are made somewhat oversize and require to be fitted to the frames of the openings which are to receive them at the building which is being erected.
\ Prior to the present invention, it has been customary for workmen'to trim the edges of'the door frames, or window frames, as the case maybe, by means of hand planers.

I 1 y I I The primary object of the present inventio'nis to provide an edge-planing device by means of which an operator cantrim the edges of heavy doors, for example, with great facility and with thorough accuracy. The improved edge-planer, moreover, 'is adapted to produce either a square edge or a slightly undercut edge, as may be. desired.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1, is a broken plan view ofa door having a template (shown brokenly) mounted thereon, the view showing also the improved edge-planer mounted on the template; Fig. 2, a broken sectional view illustrating adjustable means with which the edge-planer is equipped for gaging the depth of cut; Fig. 3, a broken vertical sectional view taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 5; Fig. 4, a vertical sectional View taken as indicated at line 4 of'Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a broken edge view of the. door and template, showing the planer in position; and Fig. 6 a broken horizontal sectional view taken as indicated at line 6-6 of 4t.

The edge-planer B, in the illustration given, comprises a base-plate, B having a flat,ysmooth, lower surface and equipped at one lateral edge witha depending guideflange 2; an electric motor B mounted on the plate B; and a cutter-housing 13 carried by and depending from the flange 2, and having journalled therein a vertically disposed revolving cutter B. I
The base-plate B is adapted to rest in horizontal position upon the template A, which, in turn, surmounts the work, which may consist of a door frame, window frame, or the like. The plate B preferably is abouteighteen inches in length, and is equipped with handles 3 and 4 by means of which the planer may be manipulated by the work man. The plate is further equipped with a standard, or standards, 5, formed integrally with the plate and rising therefrom. The. frameof the motor B is equipped with lugs 6 which are secured to the members "5, and with lugs 7 which are secured to the baseplate B, as by means of ca'p'screws 8. The guide-flange 2 is provided at its inner surface with a longitudinal groove 9 (Figs. 2 and 4), in which is located a guide-bar 10. This guide-bar is equipped at its end portions with headed studs 11 which work through perforations with which the flange 2 is provided. Springs 12 are interposed between the heads of said'studs and the bottoms of the counter-sinks in which the heads of the studs work. The guide-flange 2 is equipped with lugs 13 equipped with pivots 14 upon which are mounted adjusting le vers 15 provided with cam-heads 15, which are so formed that the guide-bar 10 can be adjusted in either of three positions, viz, in a completely sheathed position, in an intermediate position, or in a completely projected position. The cams are provided with flattened surfaces so that the levers will be locked in any adjusted position. It will be understood that by means described, the guide-bar 10 may be adjusted to gage the depth of cut.
The cutter housing B? preferably is formed integrally with the base-plate B and its guide-flange 2. The housing projects a sutiicient distance below the plane of the base-plate to enable the knives of the cutter to properly engage the edge of the work being trimmed. The housing is shown as comprising a cylindrical member having its inner halt, or somewhat more than its inner half, cut away to enable the cutter to engage the edge of the door.
The cutter B comprises a shaft 16, a body portion 16, and adjustable blades 16*. The shaft 16 is journalled in anti-friction bearings 17 with which the housing is equipped. These bearings are shown diagrammatically. In practice, they will be of such character as to afford a thrust bearing for the cutter. The upper end of the shaft 16 is connected by a suitable connection 18 with the lower end of the shaft 19 ot' the superposed motor B.
Preferably, the axis of the cutter is vertical, and the edges of the blades 16 incline somewhat, as indicated at 16 in Fig. 3, so as to-produce a desired amount of under cut on the edge of the door. If it be desired to take a right-angle cut, this may be accomplished by placing a shim-strip over the outer strip 1 of the template, thus elevating the outer edge of the base-plate B slightly.
The blades 1t are adjustably secured to the body portion 16 of the cutter by means of cap-screws'and slots, as indicated at 20.
As shown in Fig. 3, the upper end oi the shaft 16 is provided with a flange which forms a part of the connection 18. Therefore, the shaft must, in this construction, be inserted intot-he bearing from above. The bearing at the lower end of the housing B has a removable section 21, this section being secured to lugs 22 by means of cap-screws 21".
The method of using the edge-planer may be described briefly: The work, such as a door or sash, may be supported on a bench C. The template A. is placed upon the door and clamped theretoby suitable means (not shown). The template thus serves as a straight edge against which the guide flange 2 of the base-plate B of the implement may bear. The workman shoves the plane along the templet while the cutter operates to trim the edge of the door. The depth of the cut may be regulated by adjusting the guidebar 10 carried by the guide-flange 2, this adjustment being accomplished by means of the camlevcrs 15. The finishing cut may be a light one. In the planing operation. the base-plate B rides on the strips 1 of the template. The blades of the cutter are so formed as to produce a slight undercut on the edge of the door, as will be understood from Fig; 3. If desired, however, a shimstrip (not shown) may be placed on the strip 1 which is at the edge of the door and thus bring the cutting edge to a perpendicular position, so as to produce a right angle ed 'e.

The output per workman may be increased several told by employing the improved implement. This is amatter of very great importance in fitting the doors of buildings which are provided, in some instances, with hundreds of doors. I
The foregoing detailed description has beenrgiven for clearness of understanding only and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the app-ended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: U
-1. An edge-planer comprising a base-plate equipped at its upper side with handles and at one lateral edge with a depending guideflange and depending cutter-housing; amotor mounted on said plate; and a revolving cutter journalled in said housing and; actuated by said motor.
2. An edge-planer comprising a base-plate equipped at its upper side with handles and at one lateral edge with a guide-flange; a vertical revolving cutter journalledat one lateral edge of said plate and depending below said guide-flange; and a vertical motor mounted on said guide-plate and having its armature shatt connected directly with the shaft of said cutter. 1
3. An edge-planer comprising a'base-plate equipped at one lateral edge with a depending guide-flange which is provided with a longitudinal groove, a guide-bar mounted in said groove, means for adjusting said guidebar to gage the depth of cut, a motor mounted on said base-plate, a cutter housing depending from said base-plate,and a vertical rotary cutter journalled in said housing below the plane of said guide-flange and actuated by said motor.

In combination: a rectangular template; a base-plate adapted to slide on said template and equipped at one lateral edge with a guide-flange adapted to engage an edge of the template; handles on said baseplate, a motor mounted on said base-plate, and a vertical rotary cutter journalled at one edge of said base-plate and disposed below the plane of the base-plate, said cutter being actuated by said motor. 7
5. An edge-planer comprising a base-plate equipped with handles and with a depending guide-flange; an adjustable guide-bar connected to said guide-flange and substantially co-extensive in length therewith; a motor mounted on said base-plate; and a revolving vertical cutter depending below the plane of said guide-flange and actuated by said motor.
6. An edge-planer comprising a base-plate equipped at its upper side with handles and a standard and equipped at one lateral edge With a depending guide-flange; a vertical motor having a frame secured to said baseplate and to said standard; a vertical housing formed integrally With said base-plate and depending therefrom; and a revolving cutter mounted in said housing and having a shaft connected directly With the armature shaft of said motor.
