Abstract

1387423 Milling machines TORVALE HOLDINGS Ltd 18 May 1972 [26 May 1971] 17210/71 Heading B3K [Also in Division B5] A method of trimming a slab, e.g. of wood wool, comprises moving a pair of tool carriages each carrying at least one cutting tool along parallel spaced tracks in opposite directions to trim opposite edges of the slab. In a machine described for performing the method a slab is fed by a roller conveyer 14 on to spring-loaded ball-bearings 13 in a table 12 until it engages stops 17, 16. A clamp 19 is then lowered by a piston and cylinder device 22 and the stop 17 is also lowered. Carriages 30, only one of which is shown, are moved by lead screws 29 along spaced parallel guides 32 in opposite directions so that rotary cutters 34 carried thereby trim the opposite edges of a slab. Cutters 35 also on carriages 30 cut corner recesses in the slab near the limits of such movement. The clamp 19 is then raised, the slab rotated through 90 degrees and the other two edges of the slab then trimmed as for the first two edges. The cutter 34 may also form a rebate in the slab edge. The movement of the carriages, clamp, and stop 17 may be controlled by micro-switches and manual push-buttons in combination. A slot forming tool may also be carried by one or both of the carriages and be movable by pneumatic means into and out of the slab.
