1418423 Milling plate edges E LINSINGER 12 March 1973 [22 March 1972] 11860/73 Headings B3B and B3K In an apparatus for trimming and edgecutting rectangular plates, a work-table carries the workpiece and at least one milling cutter unit, in which the cutter rotates on an axis normal to the plane of the workpiece, is movably guided on at least one track extending at right angles to another track. In one example, Fig. 5, only two tracks 29, 30 are provided for guiding the milling unit 33 and are interconnected by a turntable 31. Simple clamping and aligning elements 32 hold the workpiece 2 on the table while two adjacent edges are milled. In a second embodiment, Figs. 1-4 tracks 3A, 3B are provided on the underside of beams 5A, 5B of portals 6A, 6B one of which 6A is slidable on tracks 15 relative to table 1. Further tracks 4A, 4B perpendicular to the first tracks 3A, 3B are carried by the table. Carriages 8 and 12A, 12B, Figs. 3 and 4, moving on the tracks 3 and 4 themselves carry tracks or guides 9 and 13 on which cross-slides 10 and 14, respectively, are slidable. Milling cutter units 21A, 21B and 22C, 22D are pivotally mounted at 23a and 23 on the cross-slides. Rollers 24a and 24 rest on the workpieces by the weight of the units and rollers 26a and 26 on pivoted arms 25a and 25 are forced upwardly on the workpieces by hydraulic actuators 27, 28 to provide a clamping and locating action. A roller bed 20 is provided on the table 1 and the work is delivered on the rollers thereof through the movable portal 6A until it engages the fixed portal 6B thereby aligning the workpiece longitudinally. Guide rails (not shown) extending along both sides of the table are displaced inwardly by electric or hydraulic means to laterally position the workpiece. The movable portal is repositioned and the workpiece can then be raised by supports 17, controlled by hydraulic actuators 19 so that it is forced against backing plates 16A, 16B on the portals. The actuators 19 not under the portals may have stroke limiting means so that the workpiece lies in the plane P 1 , Fig. 3, and the actuators may be controlled by switches actuated by the movable portal so that they are inoperative or lowered when the portal is moved. The milling units may be provided with spring-loaded sensing rollers rolling on the workpiece and connected to electrical means for controlling the in-feed of the milling cutter.
