UNITED- STATES teas-s41 PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD T. E. MAnGELs AND nnwIN-e. MANGELS, or DAVENPORT, Iowa.
DINING CABINET.
Our invention relates to improvements in dining cabinets which are provided with table and benches, and capable of being folded and closed up, and also capable of 5 being used as an independent article of furniture, or" of being inserted in, or attached to a wall, in such manner as to give the appearance of being an entrance to another room; and t-heobjects of our improvement are, first, to provide a cabinet suitable to'be installed in rooms which have not been especially built for that purpose; second, to provide a dining apartment which may be folded up in such way, as to utilize space, and at the same time furnish a needed accessory in a room; third, to furnish an article of utility capable of reducing the labor of housewives. r
We attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing, in which--' Figure 1 is an elevation taken at an angle partly in perspective of the open cabinet, with its members unfolded; F ig.2 is a perspective view of the cabinet with its doors open and members'folded; Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the cabinet taken at an angle with its members folded and its doors closed; Fig.4 is an elevation of a broken portion of one of the seat members, disclosing its' connecting means; Fig. is an elevation of a broken portion of the table member disclosing the -.connection of the table and support.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Sides 1 and 2, top 4, and back 3 of cabinet 1 constitute the framework of our invention; line 33'being a floor line. The cabinet being composed of sides 1 and 2, top 4 and back 3, its height is usually constructed conformable to the door or window openings of a room. To the front edges of sides 1* and 2, by ordinary hinge means is attached a pair of door members 5 and 6 of suitable width to close the front of cabinet 1, but to the outer edges of door members 5 and 6 by hinge means, we attach folding screen sections 7 and 8, having panels corresponding to the panels of door members 5 and 6, and of a height conformable to door members5 and 6, said screen sections 7 and 8 being so fixed as to fold inwardly upon door members 5 and 6, and which said folding screen sections 7 and 8 are of suitable Width to unite with door members 5 and 6 when unfolded in spreading theentire length of benches 14 of saidcabinet 1, when said benches 14 are unfolded and their ends 14 let down to the floor, in so screening said benches 1 L from view asto give the cabinet 1 a'room effect, in privacy and appearance, but when said folding screen sections 7 and 8, are folded inwardly against door members 5 and 6, they are out of the way, unobs-ervably enclosed inside of cabinet 1, and when door members 5 and 6 are closed it gives the cabinet '1 the appearance of being the entrance to another room.
In the top board 4 of cabinet 1, and so suitably centrally disposed therein, as to swing inwardly out of the way of door:
members 5 and 6, We have secured a lamp fixture 31, composed of a swinging crane supporting a lamp, which crane 31 is of suitable length, when swung out,.to-centrally suspend lamp 32 directly suitably over the table 9, when table 9 is unfolded into using position. an arm 31, of any ordinary material and has reverse right angular extremities, with ordinary'connecting threads and holes th-ere-,
in, and is so bent to enable .it in swinging to clear the elevated end of table member 9 and bench seats 15 as shown in Fig. 2, when they are upwardly folded, and yet Said lamp fixture is composed of permit, a light '32 supported on one end thereof, to extend downwardly.
We have attached said lamp fixture by a plate 31. hung to the top of the cabinet. but in other form of arm it may be attached elsewhere in the cabinet, as to the Side or back.
Unto the inside of back 3 of cabinet 1, positioned suitably from its bottom and ten trally disposed, by leaf hinge means 24, we attach a table top 9 at one of its ends, in such manner that the table top may be folded snugly upwardly against the said back 3, or let down for use operatively with support 10, attached thereto, and to the other end of said table top 9*, we attach said table end support 10 by hinge means 13, in such manner that when top 9* is upwardly folded againstback 3, said end support 10 folds downwardly against the under side of top 9*. For sanitary purposes support 10 has its bottom end centrally curved into leg efiect 10 showing thus two legs, and for convenience in being seated to it, has portions 14 14 and 14 of its front edge 10 cut away. Top 9 is centrally provided on its under surface at its outer end in proximity to the point of rest upon support 10 with a spring latch 30, suitable for engaging in connecting means 30' conformably provided in the top end of support 10, for holding support 10 in place, when table top 9* is folded up.
Unto the inside of back 3 of'cabinet 1, on either sine of table top 9, we attach the ends 15 of bench seats 15, by multiple hinge means 25 in such manner that said bench seats 15 may be folded upwardly against back 3 or let down for use operatively with bench ends 1 1, provided therefor on the outer ends of bench 15. 1
Bench ends 14 each have a portion of their tops 14 and 14" cut away to form arm rests and to enable the users to more conveniently get their bodies in and out by table top 10, and they likewise have a portion of their bottom parts cut away at 1 11f to enable the users to more conveniently get their feet in and out by the foot of table support 10.
Bench ends 1 1 are respectively operative'ly attached unto the outer ends of bench seats 15 by multiple hinge means 23' and 2 k in such way as to allow the bench ends 1 1 to fold and unfold outwardly as the bench seat 15 is raised unto or lowered away from the back of cabinet 3, the purpose being obvious.
To the back sides of bench seats 15 by multiple hinge means, we attach seat backs 22 in such manner that when the tops of bench ends 1 1 are tilted outwardly, the seat backs 22 will fold forward upon bench seats 15, and be carried upward against cabinet back 3, in folding, and be unfolded for use as directed, when the bench seat 15 is again lowered.
To facilitate the folding of backs 22 upon bench seat 15, against cabinet back 3, the multiple hinges 25 used are prepared with long curved upper leaves to provide space for folding.
To secure said seatibacks 22 to seat ends 14 and the cabinet back 3 to prevent its falling backward we have provided suitable hasps and latches 26, but the rear end of the back may rest against the inside of side boards 1 and 2, with safety.
Seat back 22 is shown composed of slats 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21, but the same may be constructed of any suitable material. I
Other hinges 28 are shown beside 27 for the purpose of illustrating that any number of hinges may be used as desired.
We claim:
In a cabinet of the class'described, a bench member having a seat hingedly attached to the inside of the back of said cabinet in such manner that said seat may be folded up wardly against said cabinet back, a seat back hingedly secured to one of the edges. of said seat in such manner as to forwardly fold upon said seat, an end seat brace, hingedly secured near the middle of its linear dimension to an end of said seat in such nanner as to fold outwardly against the bottom of said seat when said seat is raised; hasp fastening meanssecured upon the outer end of said seat back, an upper end of said seat brace capable of co-opera-tively securingthe said seat back to the said seat brace, other hasp fastenii'igmeans secured upon said cabinet back and top end of said sea t brace capable of co-operatively securing said bench to said cabinet back, said sea-t end having portions of its front ,edge and bottom end cut away to facilitate its use, all for the purposes specified, I
Done at the city of Davenport, in the county of Scottand'State o'fl'ow'a, this fifteenth day of April, A. D. 1925, I I
