Irv i239 umrso STATES PATENT OFFICE. f
IRVING N. STEWART, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
' ron'miznn WARDROBE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented June 1, 1920.
Application filed Qctober 8, 1919. Serial No. 329,275.
This invention relates to wardrobes and like cabinets, and the object. of the invention is to provide a wardrobe which may be collapsed to minimum proportions and which is so light of weight as to make it thoroughly portable.
In the attached drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the wardrobe set up and with the doors open to show the details of the construction;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the ward-.
robe; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective of the wardrobe folded.
With reference to the drawings, the wardrobe comprises two side panels, 1 and 2,connected at or near their tops. and bottoms by means of top and floor members, 3 and 4 respectively. The floor member 4 consists of two equal panels, 1* and 43 said panels being connected at their outer edges to the side panels 1 and 2 respectively by means of hinges 4 located on the inside of the wardrobe, and the two floor anels, 4: and 4, being connected at their adjoining edges by hinges 4? located upon the underside of the floor and on the outside of the wardrobe. A bolt, 5, or the like, is provided upon the inside of the floor, 4, said bolt extending across the joint of the panels 4*- and 4 to reinforce the hinges 4 in supporting the floor at its center and to make it more rigid- The top, 3., of the wardrobe consists of two equal panels 3 and 3*, said panels being connected at their outer edges to the side panels 1 and 2 respectively by means of hinges, not shown in the drawings, said hinges corresponding to the hinges 4 upon the floor panels and being located upon the underside of the said top panels and .upon the inside of the wardrobe. The top panels, 3 and 3 are connected at their adjoining edges by hinges 3, said hinges being located upon the upper surface of the top as clearly shown in the drawings. A. bolt, 6, or the like, extends between the top panels upon the inside of the wardrobe and prevents sagging of the top.
Extending between the side panels, 1 and 2, near the top thereof is a shelf member, 7, said shelf being attached in the present instance to the side panel, 1, by hinges (not shown) located upon the underside of said shelf. At the opposite side, the shelf is detachably secured to the side panel, 2, by a hook, 7, and is supported by bolts, 7', secured to the underside of. the shelf, said bolts entering keepers, 7, carried upon the inside of the panel 2.
Hinged to the side panel, 1, at one corner of the wardrobe is a door, 8, and a similar door, 9, is hinged to the side panel, 2, atthe diagonally opposite corner of the wardrobe. The hinges, 10, which connect these doors to the panels are of the double action type, and permit the doors being foldedback against the sides of the panels, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
In folding the wardrobe, the hook 7 attached to the shelf, 7, is released, the bolts 7* withdrawn, and the shelf 7 lowered'to the position, shown in Fig. 3, in which it is suspended from the hinges attaching it to the side panel 1. The doors 8 and 9 are then folded back against the panels 1 and 2 respectively, the bolts 5 and 6 released and stance, a hook 11, extending between the side panels 1 and 2- A cabinet or wardrobe constructed upon the principles herein disclosed finds a particular application to apartments and the like in which it is necessary to take advantage of every possible foot of floor space and in which there is little or no closet space. A Wardrobe of this type, being extremely portable, maybe moved at will to the part of the house which is best adapted to receive it, and may be folded to negligible proportions when extra floor space may be required.
I claim:
bottom panels, said roof and bottom panels being formed in two equal sections hinged A wardrobe having side panels, roof and. I
together at their abutting edges and each hinged at its opposite edge to one of the side panels,'releasable supporting means dis posed at the point of abutment of the sec- 5 tions, a shelf disposed within the wardrobe,-
said shelf being hinged to one of the side panels and detachably connectible to the structure adapted to be collapsed into a substantially flat unit when. not in use.
