VANITY CASE FOR AUTOMOIBILES.

My invention has for its principal ob'e'cts to provide a vanity case for automo iles which combines in a single neat compact and attractive construction, the conveniences and advantages of containers, receptacles and holders for a mirror, perfumery, powder pulf, handkerchiefs, etc., with a top opening matches, and other articles of toilet, pleas v ure and necessity.

To this end my invention consists .in its present embodiment of a case provided with means for attaching it to the interior wall of an automobile, and formed with .a rear shallow transverse compartment for a mirror, with a capacious front opening compartment on one side for erfumery, powder puff, handkerchiefs, etc., with a top opening compartment alongside 'the front opening compartment to receive a removable box for cigarettes, etc., with an end opening compartment to receive a sliding match box holder, below the front opening compartment, and alongside the end opening compartment and below the top opening com-- partment with a pivotal top opening drawer, to receive a removable tray for burnt matches, ashes, etc., pivoted to swing outwardly and laterally so as togive ready and complete access to its interior.

.In order that the nature and scope of m invention may be clearly understood in a1 its features, Ishall first describe in detail the mode in which I at present prefer to carry it into effect and then point out its various features in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings forming part of this application in WhlCh like parts are designated by the same numbers in all the figures.

Figure 1' is a front elevation of a vanity case embodying my invention with all the compartments closed andthe various receptacles in place in the compartment.

Figure 2 is a front sectional elevation of the same.

Figure 3 is a front elevation of the same with all the compartments opened and the receptacles exposed forconvenient access.

-is formed a to When all the compartments and receptacles of the case 5 areclosed as shown in Figurel, the vanity case is made by preference compact-1y rectangular in form with slightly rounded upper corners, and is shallow in cross-section relatively to its breadth and height so that it can be hun with its back flat against the interior of t e wall of the car. The case will thus not project inconvenientlyin the way of the occupants of the car, and at the same time will be easy of ac- "cess and will make an attractive ornament as well as a useful appurtenance forthecar.

On the back 6 of the case 5 are provided means for fixing it detachably to the wall or upholstery of the car, for which attaching I means in this case I prefer to use tapering vertical ribs 7 dovetail in cross section, fastened to the back 6, and adapted to fit in a correspondingly formed socket 30 on a plate fixed to the wall of the car.'

The back of the case is formed with a horizontally shallow transverse compartment 8, opening preferably at the top to receive a removable mirror 9, and extending preferably over the entire back of the case so as to accommodate a mirror of the largest size consistent with the vertical and transverse dimensions of the case. The mirror 9 has the usual tab 10 for withdrawing it from its compartment.

In front of the mirror compartment 8-, on one side, in this example the left side, is formed a forwardly opening compartment 11 to. accommodate a powder puff, handkerchiefs, perfumery, etc., and the front opening of the compartment 11 is closed in thiscase, by a drop door 12, hinged at its lower edge to the lower front edge of the compartment 11, and formed with inwardly extending walls 13 on each side so as to form when opened and dropped by its handle 14, a sloping chute-like extension of the compartment 11, from which the desired articles may be conveniently selected and extracted, while preventing them from falling out of the case. The wall of this compartment is usually fitted with an ordinary spring clip (not shown) for holdin a small bottle of perfume.

Alongside of the compartment 11, and prefera 1y flush and coincident and harmonious incontour and decoration therewith, opening compartment 15 to receive a vertically sliding and removable cigarette box 16, having in this instance two vertical compartments for cigarettes of difwhich it also closes.

The recessed cover 18 when closed 'receives within it the upper end of the cigarette box 16', and when opened it is swung upwardly and laterally entirely out of the way of the cigarette box, which is pushed upward bv its spring 17- so that the cigarettes in the box will be all completely uncovered and easily accessible.

In the bottom of the case 5 below the compartment 11, and registering on its end and front face therewith, is formed a horizontal compartment 19 opening endwise at the side of the case to receive a transversely sliding holder 20 for a: match box, the holder 20 having the usual tab 21 for pulling it out of its compartment and an ignition surface 22 for the matches. i

Inthe bottom of the case also, alongside the match compartment 19, and below the cigarette compartment 15, is fitted a top opening pivotal ash drawer 23, registering on the side and front with the cigarette compartment 15 and on the bottom and front with the match compartment 19, so that when all the compartments and receptacles of the case are closed the case will have the compact and attractive rectangular and unbroken outlines shown in Figure 1.

The drawer 23 for ashes, burnt matches, etc., is pivoted .at its outer rear vertical edge to the corresponding edge at the back of the case so that it can be swung by its handle 24 forward and laterally completely out of the angular space in the case-provided for it, as best shown in Figure 3. The drawer is. thus adapted and fitted to receive vertically a. removable top openlng tray 27 in which the ashes, etc., are received and by -which theyv are'removed fromthe drawer; v thistray havin de ressed cross bars 25 for convenience in an g it. On the free end of the drawers 2 3 is preferably provided a flat check spring 26 to press against'the case and hold the drawer against accidental displacement.

By the novel construction, and arrangement shown and described of the various compartments and receptacles of this case, I

.have provided a vanity case which is not only of neat compact and attractive appearance, but in which the various compartments and receptacles are so arranged with respect to each other and to the whole case that any one or all can be opened and their contents exposed and conveniently extracted without interfering with the use of any of the other compartments, receptacles or their contents.

It is evident that many changes may be made in the details of the case herein shown and described without departing from the boundaries of my invention as defined by the following claims.

I claim as my invention 1. A vanity case formed with a shallow rear transverse compartment, a forwardly:

opening upper front compartment on one side, an upwardly opening upper front compartment on the other side, and end opening lower compartment on one side and a front opening lower compartment on the other side.

2. A vanity case formed with a shallow rear transverse compartment of the full depth and width of the case, a forwardly opening upper front compartment on one side, an upwardly 'openin upper front'comlower compartment on one side and a front opiening lower compartment on the other S1 e. r

3. A vanity case formed with a shallow partment on the other si e, an end opening' rear transverse compartment, upper toilet and cigarette compartments in front of the rear compartment, a match compartment belowthe toilet compartment and an ash drawer below the clgarette compartment hinged to swing forwardly and laterally wholly outside the cigarette compartment to receive a removable ash tray.
