R. J. GREENWAY ANTI-OFFSET MECHANISM FOR PRINTING PRESSES Filed March 5, 1925 INVENToR ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 9, 1927.
RICHARD J. GREENWAXOF wnsTnnLY, RHODE ISLAND, AssIGNoR r.ro C. B, COTTRELI. a soNs COMPANY, or sroNINGrON, CONNECTICUT, .A CORPORATION or DELA WARE.
Application `filed March 3, 1925. Serial No..12,847. i
The object of my invention is to provide Certain improvements in the construction, form and'arrangement of the several parts of the offset mechanism whereby antioffset powder is applied to the surface of a movable offset element, such as the offset cylinder which Comes in Contact with a freshly printed side of a traveling web, so as to not only prevent smutting or sticking of the sheets in the delivery pile but also to prevent offsetting onto the packing of the offset cylinder, thereby materially prolonging the effective life of the said packing.
A practical embodiment of my invention The web 1 4which has justibcen printedV upon one side by the first printing unit (not shown herein) is represented as passing around the Offset Cylinder 2 Vof thesecond printing yunit to be printed on its opposite..
side, This offset Cylinder 2 has its shaft 3 suitably mounted in the'frame 4.
The vOffset cylinder 2 maybe provided The endless belt with the usual packing 5. 6 passes aroundthe drive roll 7, the idler rollsl 8, -9 and the belt tightenerl roll 10.l
These rolls are all suitably mounted in the frame 4 and the rolls 8 and 9 Vare so arranged as to cause the endless belt 6 to'have an extended Contact with thev packing 5 on the offset cylinder 2. i.
y The. anti-offset powder supply fountain is denoted by 11and its fountain roll 12 is arranged in position to supply the anti-offset powder directly to the endless lbelt 6 for transfer' thereby Onto the packing 5 ofthe Offset Cylinder 2. Y
An adjustable doctor knife 13 is mounted in the fountain 11 in position to regulate the amount of anti-offset powder supplied by the fountain roll 12 to the endless belt 6.
`The offset cylinder, theendless belt and the fountain roll are driven at the same surface speed through .the gears 14, 15, shaft FF-Ieclf 16, bevel `gears 17, 18, .shaft 19, bevelgears 20,721, shaft 22 and gears 23, 24. f
`It will be seen that bythis arrangement I am enabled to apply the anti-offset powder to the surface of the oifsetcylinder 2, which side of the traveling web 1, the supply being regulated by the doctor knifev 13, so that all waste of the powder may be eliminated and also so that too muchpowder need not be applied to the freshly printed side ofthe VThis arrangement not only increases` web. theeffective life of the packing on the or'set cylinder by preventing offset thereon, but
also prevents the smutting and `sticking of the sheets cut from the web when delivered into the pile. f It is ,evident that various changes may be resorted to in the Construction, form and arrangement of theseveral parts without departing from the spirit and scope fof myl invention;A hence, I do not intendV to limit myself to the particular embodiment herein shown anddescribed, butv What Iclaim is:-l 1. A rotary offset cylinder around which a traveling lweb is passed with af freshly in saigd cylinder, an anti-offset-powder supply fountain, and a fountain rollfor ,supplyingl anti-offset powder to the saidbelt forappli-f cation thereby to the web contacting surface ofthe oifsetcylinder. .Y
Y 2.. A rotary odset-cylinder around which Vprinted side in Contact therewith, `a travel- .i
endless belt arranged for contact'with'.
a traveling web is passedl with a freshly,v
' printed side in vContact therewith, a traveling endless belt arranged for.' Contact withl said cylinder, an'anti-oft'set powder supply fountain, a fountain roll for supplying anti-k Oifset'powder to the said belt for application thereby to the web contacting surface of the offset Cylinder, and means for driving the cylinder, belt and fountain roll `at the same surface speed.'
In testimony, that Il claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signedmy name this- 27th day of February, A; D, 1925.
