UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD GREENWAY, ,OF WESTERLY, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO 0. B. COTTRELL '& SONS COMPANY, OF STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OI DELA- wann ANTIOFFSIiZT MECHANISM FOR PRINTING PRFSS ES.
Applleation flled March 3, 1925. Serial No. 12.842.
The object .of-my invention is to provide certain improvements in the construc- 18 the freshly printed side of the sheet or web;.
said-elements including a traveling endless .belt arranged for contact (preferably ex-' tended contact) with the sheet or web while on its carrier, means being employed for applying the anti-offset powder in regulable quantities to the endless belt for transfer.
thereby onto the freshly printed side of the sheet or web. I
' A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawin s, in which ig. 1 represents in side elevation so much of a printing press as includes my improved anti-offset mechanism.
Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section through the same.
The rotary carrier is herein shown as a sheet carrying cylinder 1, provided with sheet grippers 2, the shaft 3 of which cylinder is suitably mounted in the frame 4.
The endless belt 5 passes around the drive roll 6, the idler roll 7 and the belt tightener roll 8 and underneath thebfl'set powder applying roll 9. These rolls are all suitably mounted in the frame 4 and the rolls 7 and 8 are so arranged as to cause'the endless belt 5 to have an extended contact with the freshly printed side of the sheet on the carrier.
The anti-oflset'powder supply fountain is denoted by 10 and its roll 11 is arranged in position to transfer the anti-offset powder to the roll 9, which latter roll is provided with a cover of fabric, such, for instance as felt, pile fabric and the like.
An adjustable doctor knife 12 is mounted 'in the fountain 10 imposition to regulate the printed side of the amountof anti-offset powder Jtaken b the fountain roll 11 for transfer to the, abr ic covered roll 9. Thisroll 9 applies the antiinvention; hence, I
15, 16 and 17 leading from thecarrier gear Itwill be seen that by this arrangementl am enabled toiapply the anti-offset owder.
to the, freshly, printed side of the s eet or web in regulable quantities so that all waste of the powder may be eliminated and also so that too much powder need not be applied to llthe'freshly printed side of the sheet or we It is evident that various changes. may be resorted to in the constructiom'form and arrangement of the several arts without departing from the s irit' an scope of my 0 not intend to limit myself to the particular embodiment hereinshown and described but What I claim 'is: I 1. A rotary carrier for a freshly printed sheet or web, a traveling endless belt arranged freshly printed outer side oft e sheet or web.
sheet or' web, a-- traveling endless belt arwhi e on the carrier, and a fabric'covered roll for applying anti-offset powderto the 3. A rotary carrier for a freshly printed ran edifor contact with the'sheet or webbelt for transfer thereby onto-the freshly printed outer side of the sheet or web, the
carrier, belt and roll being driven at the. I
same surface speed. r
4'. A rotary carrier-for a freshlyprinted sheet or web, a traveling endless belt arranged for extended contact with the sheet or web'whilexon the carrier, and a fabric covered roll for applying anti-offset powder to the belt for transfer thereby onto the freshly. printed outer side of the sheet or web,-the carrier, belt and roll being driven' at the same surface speed.
5, 'A rotary'carrier-for a freshly printed sheet or web, a traveling'endless belt arranged for contact with the sheet or web while on the carrier, an anti-offset powder supply fountain, afountain roll, and afabric covered roll engaged thereby for applying the anti-ofi'set powder to the belt for transfer thereby onto the freshly printed outer side of the sheet or web.
6. A rotary carrier for a freshly printed sheet or web, a traveling endless belt arranged for extended contact with the sheet or web while on the carrier, an anti-offset powder supply fountain, a fountain roll, and
a fabric covered roll engaged thereby for applying the anti-offset powder to'the belt 'for transfer thereby onto the freshly printed outer side of the sheet or web.
7 A rotary carrier for a freshly printed sheet or web, a traveling endless belt arranged for contact with the sheet orweb while on the carrier, an anti-offset powdersupply fountain, a fountain roll, and a faba fabric covered roll engaged thereby for applying the anti-offset powder to the belt for transfer thereby onto the freshly printed outer side of the sheet or web, the carrier, belt and rolls being driven at the same surface speed.
In testimony, that I claim thevforegoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 27th day of February, A. D. 1925.
