AN'IIOFFSET MECHANISM FOR PRINTING IPRESSES.
. Application filed. March 3, 1925. Serial No. 12,844.
The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of the several elemerits of the anti-offset mechanism, whereby the anti-offset powder-may be efliciently and thoroughly applied without waste, tothe freshly printed side of a traveling web; said elements including atraveling endless belt arranged for contact (preferably extended contact) with the web, means being employedfor applying the anti-offset powder in regulable quantities to the endless belt for transfer thereby onto the freshly printed side of the web.
A practical embodiment of my invention is representedin the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 represents in side elevation so much of a printing press as includes my improved anti-offset mechanism.
Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section through the same.
The web 1 passes between the plate cylinder 2 and impression cylinder 3, the shafts 4 and 5 of which cylinders are suitably mounted in the frame 6.
The endless belt 7 passes around the drive roll 8 and idler roll 9, the lower portion of which belt travels along in contact with the freshly printed side of the traveling web. These rolls 8 and 9are suitably mounted in the frame 6.
The anti-offset supply fountain is denoted by 10 and its roll 11 is arranged in position to apply the anti-offset powder directly to the traveling endless belt 7. 7
An adjustable doctor knife 12 is mounted in the fOuntainlO, in position to regulate the amount of anti-offset powder taken by the fountain roll 11 for transfer to the endless belt 7.
The endless belt and the fountain roll are driven at the same surface speed as the traveling web, by providing a train of gears 13, 14, 15, leading from the impression cylinder gear 16.
It will'be seen that by this arrangement I am enabled to apply the anti-ofi'set powder to the freshly printed side of the traveling web in regulable quantities so that all waste 7 of the powder may be eliminated and'a'lso' so that too much powder need not be ap-. plied to the freshly printed side of the web, the endless belt at the same time having an extended contact with the traveling web. It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and.
arrangement of the several parts without'de contact therewith, and means for applying anti-offset powder to the belt for transfer thereby onto the freshly printed side of the web. 7 p a 2. A- -traveling endless belt, means for passing a web beneath the belt with the freshly printed side of the web in extended contact therewith, means for applying antioffset powder'to the belt for transfer there by onto the freshly printed side of the web, and means for driving the belt at the same surface speed as the web.
3. A traveling endless belt, means for passing a web beneath the belt with the freshly printed side of the web in extended contact therewith, an anti-ofiset powder supply fountain, and a fountain roll arranged to. apply the powder to the belt for transfer thereby onto the freshly printed side of the" -web. I
4. A traveling endless belt, means forv passing a webbeneath thev belt with thefreshlyprinted side of the web in extended contact therewith, an anti-offset powder supply fountain, a fountain roll arranged to apply the powder'to the belt for transfer thereby onto the freshly printed side of the v I web, and means for driving the belt and the I roll at the same surface speed as the web.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 27th day of February, A. D. 1925.
RICHARD J. GREENWAY.
