The upper section 18 of the door, like the lower section 17, is preferably formed of a plurality of horizontally disposed planks laid edge to edge upon each other and overlying the end edges of said planks, as seen in Figure 6, are metallic end cleats 23, screwed or otherwise secured to said planks for rigidly securing the planks together. rihe door section 18 is further equipped at its inner side with transverse reinforcing cleats 24 located at the ends of said section, and extending longitudinally of the section at its lower margin is a` lootvtom cleat 25 disposed to overlap the upper nargin of the lower door section 17.
Suitably fixed to the roof 12 of the car are spaced hing-e loops 26, and suitably fixed to the door section 18 near the ends thereof are hinge plates 27, each provided at its upper end, as shown in Figure 6, with alined hinge loops 28 disposed to straddle one of the loops 26. Extending through said loops are hinge pins 29 pivotally mounting the door section to swing inwardly and upwardly toward the roof of the car, as shown by dotted lines in Figure 4, to open position. Fixed to the outer side of the door section 18, at its lower margin, is a medially disposed eye plate 30, and fixed to the roof 12 of the car is a hasp 31 disposed to engage over the eye of said plate so that, as will be seen, the door section 18 may be readily secured in elevated open position. Formed in the door section, near the ends thereof, are hand openings 32, and normally closing said openings vare hinged cover plates 33 overlying the openings at the inner side of the do'or section.
Countersunk in the vertical margins of the door casing7 as particularly seen in Figure 3, are horizontally alined socket members 34 one of which is shown in detail in Figure 5 of the drawings, and fixed to the ends of the door section 18 near the lower margin thereof, are angle shaped locking plates 35, the outstanding lugs of which are provided with apertures 36 disposed in horizontal registration with the socket members 34. Hingedly mounted upon the inner ends of the plates 35 are stop members 37, and extending freely through the openings 36 of said plates are eye bolts 38 screwed into the socketmembers 34. rlhus, the bolts 38 will secure the door section 18 tightly closed and since the cleat 25 of this section overlies the upper margin ofthe door section 17, this latter section will also be held tightly closed so that the grain cannot escape from the car, while wind, snow,
rain, cinders, or the like, will be excluded. After the bolts 38 have been arranged in position, the stop members 3.7 are then swung up, when the wires of ordinary seals, as conventionally shown at 39 in Figure 1, may be passed through the eyes of said vbolts and through said stop members, for

bolts 38 cannot be removed until the stopthen the door section 18 is swung up and se cured by the hasp 31. Should the grain be piled against the door section 18 so as te make it impossible to thus swing said section upwardly, a hand is inserted first through one and then through the other of the hand openings 32 and the hinge pins 29 removed. T he upper section 18 of the door will thus be freed so that said door section may be moved to one side. After the car is emptied, 'the door section 18, is, of course, again mounted in place by means of the hinge pins and secured, by means of the hasp 31, in elevated open position, and the door section 17 may be swung to open position lying behind the retaining bars 28.
ln Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings, I have illustrated a slight modification of the in vention wherein the lower section of the door is indicated at 40 and the upper sect-ion at 41. The lower section is constructed and mounted as in the prior embodiment ofthe invention'and the upper section, while being constructed as in the prior embodimentof the invention is, however, mounted to swing` in a plane parallel with the side wall of the car. Countersunk in said side wall, as shown in Figure 8, is a socket member 42, and screwed into said'socket member is a pivot bolt 43 extending freely through the door section 41 near the adjacent upper corner thereof. llhus, the bolt 43 will support the door section 41 to swing downwardly to open position, and pivotally mounted upon the adjacent end of said door section is a hook 44 engageable with an eye 45, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 7. for securing the door section in open position. Preferably, retaining hars 46, like the bars 21, are provided to extend in front of the door section in the open position thereof. Projecting from the side wall of the car above the door opening therein, is an eye 47, and pivoted upon the free end of the door section is a hook 48 engageable with said eye Afor securing the door section in closed position, the door section being provided with hand openings like the openings 32, so that the hook 48 may be readily reached and disengaged from said eye when it is desired to open the door.

A car door including in combination with a box car having aside wall provided with a door opening, mating door sections, means swingingly lmounting one of said sections ior movement to open position in a plane parallel to said side wall, means mounting the other of said sections to swing inwardly and upwardlyy to open position and including` removable hinge pins, the latter section being providedwith hand openings through which said hingepins may be removed for detaching the latter section, andmeans for securing the sections in closed position overlying said opening. 1 Y
