UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER D. WARFIELD, OF UHIOOPEE FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN ANDERTON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPRO VEMENT IN LAMP-CHIMNEYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,826, dated May 25, 1875 application filed May 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER D. WARFIELD, of 'Ohicopee Falls, in the county of Hampden. and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new andvaluable Improvement in Lamp-Chimhe, s; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon;
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of an outside view of my lamp-chimney, and Fig. 2 is a view of one section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
This invention has relation to sectional lampchimneys; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of such a chimney in two vertical sections, fitted to each other on opposite sides of said chimney by contactedges, which are provided, respectively, with rounded or wave-like vertical ribs and correspondin g channels, forming ton gue-an dgroove joints, whereby the sections are adapted to be cast true in glass, and are prevented from becoming laterally displaced, and the upward draft of air through the chimney is protected from counteracting lateral currents, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the two vertical sections which compose the chimney. B represents the contact-edges of the sections, which may be similar in form, and cast from a pattern of a single section. One of the contact-edges, which are usually made broad, is provided with a rib, a, of rounded contour in crosssection, and connected with the contact-face by rounded angles. The other contact-face of the section is provided with a groove, 1), of corresponding rounded form, adapted to fit neatly a rib, a.
Usually both rib and groove are made straight in the direction of their length, as shown in the drawings; but they may have a certain amount of curvature, if thought desirable. A straight rib is more apt to preserve its form during annealing, and, therefore will usually fit its groove quite accurately. The rounded form of both rib and groove can be cast in glass with certainty, and therefore this form is also preferable, with a view to accuracy of contact in the joint, which is of especial importance with relation to the draft.
Near the upper and lower edges of the sections are formed the slight grooves c, on the outside, serving as bearings for the bindingsprings S, which hold the sections together, and prevent longitudinal displacement.
I am well aware that sectional lamp-chimneys are not new, aad that it is not new to provide the sections with beveled contactfaces; therefore I do not claim such invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A lamp-chimney section. having straight vertical edges, one of which is provided with a rounded rib or bead, centrally arranged on the edge, and the other of which is provided with a correspondingly-munded channel, as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER D. WARFIELD.
