SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,751, dated November 14, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. POPE, of Millville, in the county of Ouachita and State of Arkansas, have invented newand useful Improvements in Roofing, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which-- Figure 1 is aoperspective View of a portion of a roof constructed according to my improvement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of a single roof portion. 7

The object of my invention is to construct a simple and efitieientroof at low cost, and one that may be readily applied and which is capable of being covered with roofing material such as metal or felt.
My invention consists in the construction hereinafter described-and claimed.

The material of the board above the groove a projects beyond the portion lying below the said groove, and the rabbet above the tongue I) on the opposite edge of the board is tapered beyond the rabbet below the tongue so that the groove and the portions of the board above and below the groove fit the tongue and the portions of the edge of the board above and below the tongue, so as'to form a tight joint. In the upper surface of the tongue b adjoining the body of the board is formed a groove 0, to receive anywater that may leak through the joint between the edges of the adjacent boards. In the top of the board adjoining opposite edges are formed shallow channels dfwhich incline downwardly away from the joint, and in the central portion of the board is formed a shallow channel 6, the sidesof which incline downwardly from the inner borders of the channels 01 to the center of the board. It will thus be seen that the water falling on the root, instead of being allowed to flow freely to the joints of the roof boards,
is conveyed away by the inclined surfaces of the channels, and thatany water leaking through'the joints between the boards is conveyed away by the grooves in the upper surfaces of the'tongues.
A roof constructed according to my improvement requires but a single layer of boards, and it may at any time be covered by sheet metal, by felt, or by roofing paper, thus affording a double protection, since any water finding its way through leaks in the covering laid on the boards will be conveyed away and cannot find its way through the roof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent.
As an improved article of manufacture aroofing board A, provided in one'edge with a groove a, the lower or under wall of which is of less width than its upper or outer wall, and upon its opposite edge with a tongue I) of a greater width on its upper side than on its lower to properly fit an opposed groove a, the upper face of the tongue being provided with a groove 0, side channels d d and a central shallow channel 6 in the upper face of the board the sides of which channel incline downwardly and inwardly from the inner borders of the two side channels d, whiclrlatter-channels incline downwardly away from the edges of the board, substantially as set forth.
