Reference will first be had to theshade roller construction 1I 1OI6' specifically disclosed in Figures 4i, 5, 6 and 7. the shaft 7 is disposed, the same is formed with an enlargement 13, Figure 6, within which 1s arranged a normally unwound coil' spring 14 that surrounds the shaft and that is anchored at one end to thefshaft and at the opposite end to the adjacent cap plate 9 upon the roller 5.
Pivoted to the cap plate 9 is a hook dog 15, the hooked end of which is adapted'for 60 v 9 and 10, Figure 6 and 7 respectively. Each engagement within an opening 16 in the. ad- 1 jacent side of the bearing sleeve 9 in order that said hooked end may engage within a pair of shouldered notches 17 formed upon the shaft 7 within said bearing sleeve, Fig
and at this point it may be well to state the shaft 7 of the roller is 'to be held against rotation by the action of the holding means hereinafter more fully described. WVhen the shade is fully wound upon the roller,
downward pull of the same will release the shade from the roller in order that it may be positioned at the desired point with respect to the sashes as shown in the window c0111 struction of Figure 1. To prevent the reverse rotation of the roller upon the shaft,
the hook of the dog 15 willengage within either one of the shouldered notches 17 of said'shaft. However, if the'shade is quickly released, the dog 15 will ride over these shoulders even 1n the reverse direction, and

portionsof the L-bar being formed with said rack teeth being in sections 21- 21 that are pivoted ,tothe har asclearly disclosed in Figure 3, said sections being 11015 inally maintained in longitudinal alignment with the stationary portion of thetoothed side not said bar by reason of spring strips 22--22 that are secured to said pivoted sections and to the stationary portion of the bar. h
Upon the lower toothed sections 21 of each unit is a depending strip of metal 28' that extends beneath the L-bar of the unit in order said section maybe swung outwardly to the dotted line position disclosed in-Figure 3,and there be maintained by reason of a holding plate 2 l pivote d-to the lower edge of a sheet metal guard plate '25 secured to the front edge or" the L-loar 20, Figure 4.

in order that a turning ofithe roll er while in mesh with the teeth of the bars oftl'ie unit will cause the upper and lowermove ineiit of the roller in order that the same may be arranged at any desired posjticnwith respect to the window frame. Obviously, when the roller has been moved toa position at the upper ends o'fthe units orfiat the lower ends thereof and theseeubns ino'ved outwardly to the dottediline positions of Figure 3, the roller may be rotated in ref verse direction tor unwinding or winding the shade 18 without the consequent vertical movement of said roller.
