. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented se t. 30, 1919.
Application filed June 1, 1916. Serial No.101,0ss.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED W. EMERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millbridge, in the county of Washington, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Window- 1n Screens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a window screen.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a screen which is so constructed that it may be raised to various heights with the raising and the lowering of the window and so that it will be held in its raised position by the window.
A further object of the invention resides in so constructing the device that it may be conveniently rolled when not in use.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure l is an elevational view of my device showing the same mounted on a window frame and showing a portion of the sash broken away;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the device showing the manner in which it engages the window sash;
Fig. 3 is a detail of the rolling means, and
Fig. 4c is a horizontal sectional view looking upon the upper edge of the screen.
In the drawing I have illustrated a window frame 1 and a sash 2. A roller 3 is mounted at the outside of the frame and is inclosed in a cover or casing 4. A screen member 5 is provided which has on its upper and lower edges reinforcing strips 6 and 7, of metal and on its side edges flexible strips 8 forming bindings and from which metallic reinforcing plates 9 extend inwardly and prevent the bulging of the screen 5. The ends of strip 6 on the upper end of the screen 5 extend into slots 10 which are formed between pairs of guide members 11 which are secured to the sides of the window frame. This upper strip 6 is provided on each side with a strip 12, the ends ofwhich strips 12 bear against the edges of the guldes wound by means 11 and slidethereon. Thus the screen 5 may be raised or lowered at will. On one end of the roller 3 a pulley 13 is secured on which a flexible operating "member 14 is of whichthe screen may be re-wound upon the roller, the operating Icpember extending to the inside of the win- In order that the screen may be maintained in the position illustrated and so that the flies will be prevented from entering between the upper edge of the screen and the lower bar of the sash, I have secured a wedge shaped strip 15 to the innermost of the strips 12, which strip 15 bears against the side faces of opposite guides 11 and increases in width from its upper to its lower edge. The adjacent face of the sash 2 is beveled, as at 16, so that when the screen is raised after the inner sash has been raised, the strip 15 will be wedged between the lower bar of the sash 2 and the guides 11 and consequently the screen will be held in its adjusted position to cover the open lower part of the window and the flies will be prevented from entering the room.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended'claims.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a window frame and sash, of a roller mounted on the frame, a screen member secured to the roller and windable thereon, a pair of guides mounted on the frame, between which guides said screen is adapted to slide and a wedge member carried by the upper edge of the screen and adapted to wedge between the lower edge of the lower sash and the said guide.
2. The combination with a window frame and sash, of a pair of guide members mounted on each side of the frame, a vertically slidable screen mounted between said guide members, a strip secured to the upper edge of the screen and contacting with the inner face of a guide member of each pair, which strip is wedge shaped and increases in width from its upper to its lower edge, the adjacent face of the lower sash being beveled whereby the strip may be wedged UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
between said guide members and the s'ash't'o maintain the screen inraise'd position and" 3. The combination with a window frame and sashes; of "a roller mounted on the and windable thereon, a pair ofg'iiides' mounted on the frame and betweenwhich said screen is adapted to slide independently of and in alinenient with one of the sashes, and a wedge'member, carried by" the free "edge'of the screen and adapted to wedge between theadj a'cent edge and said guide, when the latter sash is open ofthe other sash and disposed in alinement with the first sash, said wedge member and screen being freedupon closlng the second sash: frame, a screen member secured to the roller V In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presenceof two witnesses.
