SUPEEHEA'TING ELEMENT.
l Appiieation med May 13,y 1924, semi No. 713,o4o,`am1 in France may 18,1923.
The superheaters of' locomotivey boi'leis consist as a rule of tubular elements ydisposed within the largesmoke vtubes of the boiler; the said elements kare connected at one end with a steam drinn disposed yin the` smoke box and receiving the steam from the boiler, andat the other end to a second steam drum f (or to another chamber of the same drum) supplyingthe superheatedstea'm to the engines.
The present invention relates to a superheating element for locomotive boilers which i is entirely contained within a smoke tube and comprises Hat tubes in parallel disposition, said tubes being traversed by the steam in one direction, and a cy'lindrical tube for the return of the superheatedsteam to the superheated steam drum.
The yfollowing description yand yappendeil drawings which are given by way of example set forth the present invention.
Figs. l to 7 relate to a superheating,sieH
ment, comprising four kfiat tubes for one di-y rection of flow and a circular tube for the other direction.y f
Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse section of a smoke tube and of a superheating element.y
Fig. 2 is a transverse section ofr four flat tubes showing their junction by welding at each end of the same. f
Figs. 3 and 4 show the box for assembling the four flat tubes either with the cap on the side next the furnace, or with a circular tube on the side next the steam drinn.
Figs.` 5 and 6 show a lengthwise section` and a plan View of the superheating element on the side next the fire box.
Fig. 7 is a lengthwise section of the superheater element on the side next the smoke box.
'As observedfin the figures, the superheat- .ing element consists of four fiat tubes a, a,
y a3, a* in'paiallel disposition in a vertical i plane; the two outer tubes of the group may have the opposite endsy thereof bent npwardly and preferably these two tubes have the opposite ends thereof bent inwardly toward the two inner 'tubes as shown in Figs. 1, 5 and 7. The four tubes are thus substantially parallel at the central portions thereof, the central portions of the two outer tubes being somewhat below the plane of the two inner tubes, while the ropposite endsof the tubes are welded togethenas shown in Fig. 2. On' the sideV of they inlet of wet steam, inthe direction'of the arrow A, Fig.
l, the four tubesy are connected with the steam drum by a Junction clement which is shownon a larger scale in `lilifgfi. 3 and 4l. f On the side next the iii-e box, Figs. 5 and 6,.
the four ytubes are connected either with. a
dium .of a junction piece analogous to the element' b. f The junction piece and the rcap of a known type can be in one piece,

caprl ofthe known type through the rme- The following advantages are offered by thesaid arrangement in accordance with the invention.
l. The steam `flows through the element only once in' the forward direction-from the smoke box towards the fire boxmand once in the back directionfrom the end next the {ire-box towards the smoke box, thereby reducing the losses of steam pressui'e ywhen traversing the element.
n 2. The said element offers afilarge superheating surface in the forward direction,y
if. e. in the direction in which the steam endue to the us-e of flat tubes in parallel disposition wherein each tube istraversed by a fraction of the steam to be superheated; thek n 'f use of the flat tubes permits of a considerable increase inthe supei'heating surface,
ywithout ydiminishing the iiow section of the gases, and thiswill offer a great increase in the eiiiciencyof the element. y
' 3. The flat tubes areplaced preferably in the vertical position i. e. with their Hat walls reduce theheat losses vin the portion in which kthe temperature of the steam exceeds the temperature of the gases flowing upon the tube. f
.,ve'rtical, as shown in. FiO' l so as to reduce The number of the fiat tubes, their external i y .and internal dimensions, and the dimensions CII ciency, taking` account of the internal diameter of the` large smoke vtube in Which the said element is to be. disposed. The accompanying; drawings show by Way of example an eleinent 'comprising four flat tubes. A'
greater or less number of flat tubes may be' employed. p
That We claim is:
l. A superheateiycomprising a set ofla-t tubes, a retuin tube circular in cross-section and extending in parallelisiirwitli said set ofy tubes, `and means comprising ljunction boxes uniting one end of said set to` said-return tube and adapted to unite the other end of said set to a saturated steam conduit.
2. A superheating` yelement for a. boiler, comprising a set ot flat tubes through which steam is circulated, said tubes being spaced apart at tlie middle and placed with their flataces in contact at Vthe ends,y a return tube, meansconnecting one end of the set of flat tubes with one end of said return tube, and means connecting the other endI of the set of fiat tubes with the steam drum of said boiler. V
3; A' superlieatingfelementl for-a boiler,
Vcomprising a set of Vflat tubes through which the steam is7 circulated, said tubes being spaced' apart at the middle and placed with In testimony whereof We have signed thisy specification.
