UNITED STATES 1,637,540 PATENT, OFFICE.
PHILIP SUKBOW, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH V. ROEHER, OF
DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
REVERSIBLE COLLAR.
Application filed July 14,
The invention relates to reversible collars of the soft or semi-stiff fold over type.
Collars of this type as heretofore made have been found impracticable owing to the fact that the construction of the collar was such that the fold over top did-not properly fold over upon the band in both directions. Withmy invention the collar is readily reversible and presents a neat and pleasing appearance with either side outermost. This is obtained by forming the collar of two separate plies and by stitching the band forming portions of these plies to a reinforcement and by stitching the edges only of the fold over top forming portions of these plies to each other in a manner to form a comparatively stiff band and to provide a fullness in the fold over top with the result that the collar not only readily and properly folds in either direction but the top also readily conforms to the band when the collar is in use. Other objects of the invention reside in the novel features of construction as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a collar embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2 of Figure 1; I
Figure 3 is a similar cross section the collar folded.
1 and 2 are two-separatecomplementary reversible showing plies 'of fabric each having the lower portion3 and the upper portion 4 respectively forming a portion of the band and a portlon of the fold over top. v To provide for readily and properly fold-ing'over the top in either direction upon the band, the band-is made comparatively stiff and the top is made full.
As shown, I have provided the reinforcement 5 between and co-extensive with the band forming portions 3 and having the folded over upper edge 6, the fold line of which establishes the fold line of the collar.
For securing the plies 1 and 2 to each other I and the reinforcement to the band forming portions 3, I stitch the edges' of, the plies 1 and 2 to each other with the exception of the central portions of the lower edges of the band forming portions 3 by the zig-zag stitching 7. This stitching also secures the lower edge of the reinforcement to the lower edges of the band forming portions 8. After zig-zag stitching, the collar is turned 1926. Serial No. 122,415.
inside out and its edges are stitched by the two rows of stitching 8 and its band forming portions 3 are stitched to the reinforcement 5 by the series of rows of stitching 9 which extend longitudinally of the band forming portions With the upper row slightly below the fold line of the reinforcement. The stitching of the band forming portions to the reinforcement by the series of rows of stitching 9 makes the band of the collar comparatively stiff. The stitchin of the band forming portions and rein orcement shortens the band and the stitching of the edges of the top forming portions to each other forms in effect a frame for the fold over top with the stitching of the upper edges of the top forming portions also shortening these upper edges so that fullness is provided in the parts of the top forming portions surrounded by the stitching where'- by the top formed thereby may readily and properly fold over upon the band in either direction and also readily conform to the band when the collar is in use. In connection with the shortening of the upper edges of the top forming portions, both the zigzag stitching 7 and the stitching 8 produce a shortening effect. This foldmg over is also facilitated by the fact that the top forming portions are secured only at their edges so that one portion may move relative to the other to a certain'extent when the collar is being folded over andis-further facilitated by reason of the zigzag stitching 7 and the stitching 8 forming a reinforced edge for the top.
The tabs 10 at the ends of thecollar band are similarly shaped and the button hole stitching 11 in these tabs is finished on oppo'site sides ofthe band so that the tabs may occupy their correct positions and the fin.-
ished side of the button hole stitching may be outermost when either side of the collar is outermost. R
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A reversible collar comprising two separate plies having cooperating band and fold over top forming portions, a reinforce ment between the band forming portions of said plies having a folded over edge for establishing the fold line of the collar, and means for securing the band forming portions of said plies and said reinforcement together and for also securing the fold over top portions of said plies together at theirv edges onl in a manner to form a comparatively sti band and also to provide a fullness in the fold over top whereby the latter folds readily in either direction upon and conforms to the band.
2. A reversible collar comprising two separate plies having cooperating band and fold over top forming portions, a reinforcement between and substantially co-extensive with the band forming portions of said plies having a folded over edge for establishing the fold line of the collar and rows of stitching for securing the band forming portions of said plies and said reinforcement together and for also securing the fold over top portions of said plies together at their edges only in a manner to form a comparatively stifi band and also to provide a fullness in the fold over top whereby the latter 5 folds readily in either direction upon and conforms to the band.
3. A reversible collar comprising two se arate plies having cooperating band and to d over top forming portions, and means providing a fullness in the fold over top and a comparatively stifi band, said means comprising a reinforcement between and substantially co-extensive with the band forming portions having a folded over edge for menace establishing the fold line of the collar, means including zig-zag stitching for securing the edges of the top forming portions together and series of rows of stitching extending longitudinally of the band forming portions for securing the reinforcement thereto.
4. A reversible collar of the semi-stiff fold-over type comprising two separate plies having cooperating band and fold-over top forming portions, a reinforcement between and substantially co-extensive with the band forming portions having a folded over edge for establishing the fold line of the collar, a series of rows of stitching extending longitudinally of the band forming portions for securing the reinforcement thereto and shortenlng the band formed thereby, stitching for securing the edges only of the foldover top forming portions to each other and formin in eifect a frame for the fold over top, said stitching and series of rows of stitching providing a fullness in the parts of the top forming portions surrounded thereby so that the fold-over top readily and properly folds in either direction and conforms to the band.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
PHILIP SUKROW.
