PATENT OFFIon.
I CALEB T. OLEAVELAND, OF OLD TOWN, MAINE.
I IMPROVEMENT IN SPOOL-HCLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,742, dated May 25, 1875 application filed February 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALEB '1. CLEAVELAND, of Old Town, in the county of Penobsoot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, which shows a perspective view of my invention.
My invention consists of a closed cylindrical case, inclosing and protecting the spool, and provided with a pin by which it may be attached to the dress of the user. It is also capable of attachment and use on the spindle of a sewing-machine. It may be provided with a thread-cutter, and may also be made adjustable to spools of difierent lengths, as hereafter described.
Referring to the drawing, a shows the cylindrical holder, of suficient size to contain an ordinary spool. b is a slot therein, through which the thread may be drawn, as required; and c, a pin attached thereto, by which the holder may be'secured to the dress. At (1 is the thread-cuttin g device referred to. A hole, f, through one or both ends of the holder a enables the number of the thread to be read, and also affords the means of attaching the holder to the spindle of a sewing-machine, when desired.
In order to make the holder adjustable to spools of difi'erent lengths I make the cover 9 in the form of a cylinder, closely fitting the outside or inside of the cylinder a, and sufficiently long to be drawn out to extend said cylinder, if desired. This inner cylinder may be split upwardly, enabling it to accommodate itself to the thread-opening in the cylinder a. The thread may in such case be entirely shut up by turning the cylinders a 9 upon each other, and may be prevented from unwinding by engaging its end between the edges of the slots.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A spool-holder consisting of the cylinder at, provided with the thread-opening 1), pin 0, and hole f, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of February, 1875.
