ATTORNEYS B. WOODS ELEVATOR Filed May 16 1.925 2 Sheets-Sheet .2
INVENTOR WITNESSES (Q A'ITORNEVS Patented July 26, 1927.
BERT WOODS, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA.
ELEVATOR.
Application filed May 16, 1925. Serial No. 30,796.
This invention relates to an improvement in grapples or lifting hooks for use in hoisting or elevating rods or the like and aims to provide a device of this character which securely holds the rods or other objects although the rods may be easily associated with or taken from the device.
A further object resides in the provision of a device of this character which is of 9 strong and durable construction, reliable in operation, and easy and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction,
arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a View in horizontal section on line 2-2 of Figure 3;
Figure 3 is a view in vertical section on line 3-3 of Figure 2, parts being shown in elevation for the sake of illustration, and the latches or holding elements being shown projected to holding position;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 but showing the latches partially retracted, and
Figure 5 is a group view in perspective showing the latches and then operating means prior to assembly.
Referring to the drawings the numera 1 designates the stock or body of the device having oppositely disposed and laterally projecting trunnions 2. The trunnions are designed for suspension from any suitable hoisting or lifting means which is connected with the trunnions by means of a bail having its arms provided with hearings in which the trunnions are fitted.
The body 1 is formed with a vertically extending rod receiving slot 5 and also having a cavity 6 therein communicating with the slot 5 by cylindrical openings 7 At the entrance to the slot '5 inclined guide surfaces 5 are provided.
Slidable holding elements or latches 8 are fitted in the openings 7 and are projected into the slot 5 and into engagement with each other by coil springs 9. The latches 8 have beveled surfaces 10 which flatly engage each other when the latchesare projected. Recesses 11 are also formed in the latches to provide a seat for the rods or other objects and to reduce to eliminate any tendency the rods might otherwise have to cause retraction of the latches. The springs 9 are received in sockets 12 formed in the inner ends of the latches 8 and bear on balls 13 positioned in said sockets. These springs abut extensions 14.- integral with an inverted U-shaped handle member 15 fastened asat 16 to the walls of the cavity 6.
In arcuate bearing surfaces 17 formed in the walls of the cavity 5 a latch releasing rOd 18 is slidably fitted. At its upper end gripmembers 19 are integrally formed with the rod and at its lower end the rod carries a curved driving cam bar 20 cooperable with driven cam bars 21 integrally formed with or suitably connected to the latches 8.
lVith this arrangement the latches may be easily retracted to release the rods or to permit of their easy insertion. The flat outer ends of the rods permit under some circumstances the automatic insert of the rods. When the latches are projected and so the rods confined in the slot 5 by the latches the rods cannot be disengaged until the latches are retracted under the control of the operator. The inclination of the latches makes it possible to use the strength of two; to easily control and operate the same; and to exert a powerful holding action.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described a body having a slot and also having a cav- 9e ity and inclined opening leading from the cavity into the slot, latches slidably fitted in the openings and projectible into the slot, springs for projecting the latches, and controllable means for retracting the latches 5 and comprising a shiftablelatch releasing rod having a driving cam at its inner end and driven cams fixed to the latches.
2. In a device of the character described a body having a slot and also having a. cavand driven cams fixed to the latches, grip members at the outer end of the rod, and a cooperable handle member fixed to body and 1 having extensions providing abutinents for the springs.
