Description

- naar. om
JOI-IN s. BREWER, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 112,214, dated February 28, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR Ll-FTING BARRELS', &c.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Ptent and making part of the lame.v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, JOHN S. BREWER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gan-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following toV be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willenable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which the figure is a side elevation of an ordinary barrel with my improvement attached thereto.
The object of my invention is to provide a device, by the use of which open barrels Or casks, when filled with merchandise, may be hoisted or lowered to any desired location with ease and security; and
The improvement consists in a sling so arranged as to tit around the periphery vof the barrel, and to which is attached ropes or chains having at their lower ends can-hooks, which catch under the bottom chine of the barrel, a description of which in detail will be hereinafter fully| given.
In tne accompanying drawing- A represents the sling, the central portion of which is made double near one-third of its length, more or less, and has its ends united to and around a metal eyelet, B, within which is secured the rope communicating with the windlass. (Not shown.)`
C O are ropes or chains, the upper ends of which arelalso provided with metal eyelets, through which Y s said sling passes. y
Affixed to the lower end of said ropes O C are metal hooks D D, which are `so arranged as to engage with and take under thebottom chine of the barrel.
, In using my invention it is operated as follo\vs:
When it is desired to hoist or .lower a barrel having'an open end and filled with merchandise, hooks D D are secured to the lower chine and ropes or chains C O adjusted to opposite sides of the barrel. The looped or double portion of sling A is then se cured to the upper end of the barrel,- around its periphery; thus, as said sling is drawn upward by the rope communicating with the windlass, the double portion is drawn slightly through the eyelets of ropes O C, which firmly tightens the same around the barrel, holding the same'in a vertical position as it is `raised by hooks D D. l
I do not wish to continemyself strictly to the ropes or chains -G O, as metal rods, properly arranged, may be used; no1' exclusivelyto the metal hooks, as the ropes O C may be of one piece passing under the barrel, which will produce the same result.
Having vthus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent', is-
The sling A, in combination with ropes or chains
