BELT BUCKLE.
Application filed March 15, 1927. Serial No. 175,580.
This invention relates to belt buckles and has for an important object thereof the provision of a simple and durable structure which will securely hold the ends of a belt or strap in adjusted relation to one another.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of this character eliminating the necessity for the formation of openings in the belt and in which the number of moving parts employed is reduced to a minimum.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a buckle constructed in accordance with my invention;

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates the sides and 11 and 12 the ends of an open rectangular frame formed of metal. The arms 10, adjacent the end 12, are formed with longitudinally extending slots 13 through which extend the downturned ends 14 of a cross bar 15. The cross bar 15 has formed line 44 of therein a slot 16 for the passage of a belt strap, this slot extending in a direction transverse to the rectangular frame and being so positioned upon the cross bar that in one position thereof. it will overlie the end member 12 of the frame. Vith the under surfaces of the arms 10 are slidably engaged plates 17 through which the downturned ends 14. of the cross bar 15 extend and areupsetto maintain the bar and plate 17 in assembled relation, while permitting the cross bar to slide freely upon the frame.
In the use of the buckle, the belt strap 18 is passed through the slot 16 from the front face of the cross bar 15and then brought out between the arms 10 and under the cross bar 15 until it overlies the cross bar 11 to which the opposite end of the belt strap is secured. With the strap in this position, any pull tending to increase the effective length of the belt will cause the belt strap 18 to be bound between the rear edge 19 of the slot and the inner edge 20 of the cross bar 15, as the belt being kinked in its passage through the slot and closely fitting in this slot will tend to move the cross bar 15 to a position where the slot 16 overlies the bar 12.
It will be obvious that a belt buckle of this character may be very readilyrand cheaply produced, will be durable and efficient in service and a general improvement in the art. Since the construction hereinbefore set .ing from the spirit of the invention, I do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim A belt buckle comprising an open rectangular metallic frame the sides of which are provided adjacent one, end of the frame with longitudinally extending slots, a cross bar slidably engaging the upper surface of the side members and having downturned portions projecting through said slots, means at the opposite face of the frame with which said downturned portions are engaged preventing withdrawal of the downturned portions from the slots and a belt receiving slot formed in said cross bar and in one position of the cross bar overlying the adjacent end member of the frame, the means preventing disengagement of the downturned portions from the slots comprising plates slidably engaging the side members of the frame at the opposite face thereof from said cross bar and through which said downturned portions extend, the downturned portions beneath said plates being upsetto prevent their withdrawal therethrough.
