" appiimn filed January 15, i927. "seiiaiNo,161,406. A
(GRANTED UNDER THE AcT or MARCH s, 1883; 22 STAT. 15625.)
The invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its oiiicers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the United States, without payment to .me of any royalty thereon, in accordance with the act of March 3, 1883.
The subject of this invention is a fastening device for shields. n
The principal object of this invention is the provision of a fastening means for hold ing the shields of a gun carriage in adius'ted position, which will be held against rattling, not require any additional securing means to hold it in place and which is particularly useful when employed with a reversible brace.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel arrangement and combination of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying .drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation of a gun shield;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 1 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3 showing a. modification of the fastening;
Figs. 5 and 6 are detailed views of the bolt shown in Fig. 4; and
Figs. 7 and 8 are detailed views of the key shown in Fig. 4.
The armor of a gun carriage consists of a main shield 5 and, dependent upon the particular type of gun mount, there are arranged one or more top shields such as are shown at 6 and 7 When the gun is in action it is obvious that the shield whose function is to protect the gunners and the delicate instrument on the gun is in the raised position while when the carriage is in transit the top shields are in the lower or folded position and form a back rest for the guniiers for whom seats may be provided onV each side of the gun.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 the device for holding the top shield 6 in adjusted position consists of a brace 8 pivoted in brackets 9 on the main shield and carrying at its extremity a fastening device consistsing of a key 9 secured to a bolt 10 by means of a pin 11. The under face of the key is formed f with a pair of teeth l2 adapted tolit in recesses 13 formed in the brace and a spring 14 surrounding the bolt and confined between an annular shoulder 15 thereon and the brace, serves to hold the key and bolt in adjusted position.
i When the top shield 6 is in the raised position shown in Fig. 1 the key passes through the opening 16 in the top shield and on being turned holds the top shield in place and rigidly secures the brace.
When the top shield is folded (Fig. 2) the headed end of the bolt passes through the opening 17 in the main shield and the opening 16-i1i the top shield.
In the conventional shield fastening devices it is customary to provide a snap hook for engaging the key to hold it in adjusted position. It will therefore be noted that in the present arrangement of the reversible brace the spring 14 performs the function of a pair of snap hooks.
The construction shown in Fig. 3 differs in that the spring is confined between the key and nut 18 on one end of the bolt and tends to telescope these members.
In Fig. l the spring is confined as in Fig. 3 but the recesses 13 for receiving the teeth are provided on an Aannular spacing collar 19 adjacent the headed end of the bolt. The
bolt in this instance is iixed rigidly to one` of the shields and when the key is inserted through an opening in the other shield and turned it will be securely heldin place clamping the shields together.
I claim:
1. The combination with a body memberV and an auxiliary member foldable thereon each member providedvwith an opening, a brace pivoted on the body member, a fastening device carried on the extremity of the brace, one end of said fastening device arranged to pass through the opening in the auxiliary member to hold it in extended tween the key and one end of the bolt for holding the key in adjusted position.
3. A fastening device including a pair of clamping members arranged for longitudi- 15 nal and rotatable movement With respect tu each other, a spring for moving the members together and said members provided with colnplemental means for holding them against relative rotation.
