BRYAN P. JOYCE, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA, ASSIGNOB. TO THOMAS A. CON'LON, OF SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR GUN TOOLS.
Application filed September 6, 1923.
Serial No. 661,270. 7
The invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its otlicers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the 6 United States, without payment to me of any royalty thereon, in accordance with the act of March 3, 1883.
The present invention relates to fastening devices for gun tools.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of means whereby a gun tool may be secured in non-use to the limber or other vehicle.
A further object is the provision of means wherby the tool may be secured against movement in any direction,
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel arrangement and combination of parts and. in 20 the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of the tooland its securing means; 1
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation and Fig. is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference I have shown a tool 5 adapted to be seated at either end in sockets 6 and 7, secured to a limber or other vehicle. The socket 6 entirely surrounds the end of the tool in position while socket 7 is open on one side in order to permit ready removal of the tool from the sockets.
Intermediate the sockets is a rest 8. Hinged at one side of this rest as by means of a hinge pin 10 is a retaining member 9. The pin 10 may be releasably secured by cotter pins 11. The tool is seated on the rest and the retaining member serves to secure the 1 tool in its seat. This retaining member in the preferred embodiment of my invention at the side opposite the hinge is formed with a slot 12. An eye 13 is secured to the rest 9 in tool securing position any suitable type of locking means may be employed. As illustrated I have shown a snap fastener 14 attached by means of a chain 15 and a rivet 16 to one side of the tool rest. This snap fastener cooperates with the eye 13 to secure the retaining member 9 in position and thus securely lock the tool upon the limber or other carriage.
To remove the tool the snap fastener is released and the hinge 9 swung upwardly when the tool can be readily removed from the sockets 6 and 7. To fasten the tool in positionthe reverse of this operation is pursued.
I claim:
1. A fastening device for a gun tool, em bodying a pair of sockets adapted to receive the ends of said tool, one of said sockets entirely enclosing the end of said tool and the other socket being open to permitready removal and placement of said tool, a rest intermediate said sockets, a retaining member, adapted to secure said tool in position on said rest, hinged at one end to said rest and provided at its other end with an opening, an eye on said rest adapted to pass through said opening and fastening means cooperating with said eye to retain said hinged memher in position with respect to said rest.
A fastening device for a gun tool, embodying a pair of sockets adapted to receive the ends of said tool, a rest intermediate said sockets, a retaining member, adapted to maintain said tool in position on said rest,
hinged at one end to said rest and provided BRYAN P. JOYCE.
