UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SCHERMERHORN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN F. CLEVELAND, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN TOWEL-STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,334, dated May 18, 1875; application filed October 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SOHERM'ER- HORN, of New York city, in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved Towel-Stand, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification, and represent what I consider the best means of carrying out the invention.
Figure 1 is an end elevation. The strong lines represent the hinged frames which support the towels extended for use. The dotted lines show them folded into the perpendicular position which they can be made to assume at will. Fig. 2 is a side View with the hinged frames extended. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through the upper portion, on a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all.
A light ornamental turned stand, A, is supported on legs B, which are hinged so they may be brought together, as shown in dotted lines, when required. Its upper end carries a nut, a, and supports an ornamental vertical board, E, which forms the body of the stand.
Two folding arms, M N, are mounted on opposite faces of the body. They will remain in the turned'up position for any required period, and present a tasty appearance. They may, in this condition, be used to a limited extent to support towels or analogous articles for drying, or may stand close to the wall of the apartment out of the way. When required for more efficient use the stand is moved out from the wall, and the arms M N turned down into the horizontal position, Where they are supported by the construction of the hinge. The body may be unshipped .froin the stem, and both be very completely stowed.
I claim- The towel-stand described, having the detachable ornamental body E, supported on the stem A by the nut a, and provided with two hinged frames, M N, on opposite sides, as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of October, 1874, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES SCHERMERHORN.
