f The present invention relates to securing means forrail's, and an object of the invention is to provide a metallic raily tie which will do raway with' the Lordinary wooden tie 5 and will be strong' and'durable in construction,` while, at the saine time, adapting itself readily to embedrnent in a plastic material or for vcontaining a 'plastic n/iaterial which V will firmly hold the ltiein position. `Another' Y l object of theinventionjis to provide anovel means of lsecuring the rails tothe tie so ras to firmly hold the rails in placeagainst ac-A cidental disconnection yfrom the tie. Still another object of the'invention is to provide yl an improved rail securing means which may bereadily connected and disconnected froln' ing designed. for use on'the rails betweenV `thejoi1itsv and the other being :designed for useon the. rails, at the joints; l l

embedded inconcrete so that the flange 2 eX- tends .into the bed. The top `surface of the tie may be provided with transverse depressions or grooves v3, the width of each of which is substantially equal to the base of an ordinary railroad rail.
The rail ymay be of any' suitable construction and 1n thls instance 1t has the ordinary base piece Il, the web 5 and the tread 6. In
order to' dispensewith the usual ltie plates the tread portion 6 at one end` of each rail may be projected as at 6a beyond the web 5 andthe Vbaser 4, while the opposite end may be ycut away at Gb in the tread portion sothat theweb and the base project beyond theV tread-to receive the projecting porti-on 6"1 of another raiL- Atlip 6C maybe extended from the projectingportion 6a and'be received in a pocket 6dv formed in the opposite end of 'another rail. That end of the rail which has the pocket 6a may have apocket 4a' formed in the underside thereof while a lip lb may be extended from the opposite end ofthe yweb to fit in a pocket 4l ofvan adjacent rail. )In thisy way, when" the ends of two rails are broughttogether, Vtheupper and Vlower parts of the rails areftied together. At thesame time thebreak in the kjoii'it is bridged by the tongue 6a and as a` consequence the wheel does (not strike the joint inV a way vto.hammerorpoundin passsubstantially equal vto the widtlrof the poru tion 7. Araily secuiingdevice is employed which `embodiesha head 10 with "a depending anchoring' portion which has an enlarged end ,ll and a reduced portion 12. The enlarged end has a width which is substantially equal to the width of the enlarged'portion `of the pocket 7 whilev the reduced portion 12 has a width which is substantially equal to therej stricted portion 8 of the pocket. TheL head 10 projectsfrom opposite sides of the vanchoring portion and has an inclined ,portion 13 for cooperation with theupperxsurface of f thebasefl while the opposite side ishorizontal as at 1st for cooperation with the upper surface of the tie. This securing device which is designed for one side of the rail, preferably the inner side, has its enlarged portion 11 lirst introduced into the portion 7 of the pocket and then shifted laterally in said pocket so that the -portion 11 will occupy the portion 9 of the pocket below the reduced portion 8. 1t isvpreferred to provide one of these devices for each tie except at the joints. Each rail may also be notched at intervals at 15 to receive the reduced portion 12 of each of the securing devices.
For holding the opposite or outer base of the rail, the tie is provided with a pocket 16 to one side of the portion 3 on which the rail rests. This pocket is deeper than the pocket on the inner side of the rail and has a lateral extension formed by a portion 17 of less depth than the portion 16 but of the saine width and a reduced portion 18 leading upwardly from the portion 17 and intersecting` the seat 3. The secur ing device for the outer side of the rail has a top portion 19 with an inclined. portion 2() for engaging the base of the rail. Depending from this top portion to one side of the inclined portion is an anchoring` portion comprising a reduced portion 21 substantially the width of the reduced portion 18 of the pocket and an enlarged portion 22 substantially the width of the extension 17 of the pocket 16. After the rail has been seated on the seat 8 and a securing device 10 has been engaged with the inner side thereof, the securing device 19 has its anchoring portion introduced into the pocket 16 and then shifted laterally so that it enters the extensions 17 and 18, the enlarged portion 22 occupying the portion 17 and the reduced portion 21 occupying the reduced portion 18 of said extension.
A holding means is employed for holdingr the securing` device in engagement with the outer side of the rail. This holding means, in this instance, comprises two cooperating wedge members Q8 and 2st. The wedge member Q9 rests on top of the tie and has a depending portion 25 which has one face 26 vertically arranged to cooperate with. one wall of the pocket 16 while the opposite face 27 is inclined to the vertical and to the surface 26. The inner face of this member 23 is also bevelled at 28 to cooperate with the bevelled face 29 on the securing member 19. The
wedge member 2-1 has a bevelled rib 30 on.
one side arranged to operate in a vertical groove or recess 31 in the pocket 16 below the extension 17 to prevent the turning of the member 24. This bevelled rib cooperates with a bevelled surface 32 on the anchoring portion of the securing member 19 while the opposite sides of this wedge member 24@ has a bevelled surface 33 for cooperating with the bevelled surface 27 on the depending portion 25 of the wedge member 29.
An adjustable connection is provided between the two wedge members and 2i whereby the wedge member Q1- may be drawn upwardly to force the depending portion firmly against the outer side of t-he slot 16 and to force the securing member 19 inwardly in firm engagement with the base of the rail et. This adjustable connection, in this` instance, embodies a bolt 31 which is mounted to turn loosely in the wedge member 23 and is adapted to engage a nut 13:1 secured against turning in a pocket in the underside of the wedge member 2st. It is apparent that. the turning of this screw 'l-L in one direction will elevate the wedge member 24, forcing thc extension 25 of the wedge member againstthe outer wall of the pocket 16 and 'forcing the securing device 19 inwardly over the rail base L1. The turning of the screw in the other direction causes the wedge member 2st to lower until eventually the screw disconnects from the wedge member 2st and may with the wedge member 23 be withdrawn from the pocket 16, the wedge member 2i then occupying a position below the lower edge of the securing member 19 so that the latter may be shifted laterally out of engagement with the rail base e. If desired, the outer edge of the base L may be prmf'ided with a plurality of notches 36 in which the reduced portion 21 of the securing device 19 may enter. Preferably the reduced portion of the extension 18 extends into the seat 2, of the rail so that the wall of the reduced portion will not interfere with the movement of the securing device into firm engagement with the rail base et. It is preferred to use only one of the securing devices 19 with its` cooperating wedge members on each tie piece7 but where a joint occurs two of such members may be employed for engaging the rail on opposite sides of the joint. rlhe notches in the rail base on the inner and outer sides thereof should be sutiiciently wide to permit the expansion and contraction of the rail.
vIn the use of the invention the ties are laid preferably by filling the same with cement, although they may be laid directly in the usual bed or in a bed of cement. The securing devices on the inner side of the rails are then placed in position and the rails are then placed on the seats 3, so that the inner sides of their bases et are ovcrhung by the securing devices 10. The wedge members Q4 may now be introduced into the pocket 16, and, thereafter, the securing devices 19 may have their anchoring portion fitted in the extensions of the pocket 16. The wedge members Q3 are then introduced into the pocket 16 and the bolts are then engaged with the nuts 35 so as to draw the wedge members upwardly in order to force the kio xi l) wedge .members 23 in binding engagement with the pockets 16 and the securing devices 19 lin binding engagement with the rail. It is apparent that thisarrangement notl only secures the rails to the ties Without the use oftie plates, but permits the rails to be readily disconnected from the ties.V rlhere is no danger ot' any `of the parts vWorking loose `as would be the case with the ordinary spike employed for securing rails. p
