IMPROVEMENT IN SHIELDS FOR PIPES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,241, dated May 11, 1875; application filed December 23, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY PALMIERI, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shields for Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this application.

My invention relates to a swift-connecting fire-pipe, adapted to be secured to the walls of a building to afford a means for readily attaching hose in case of fire, as patented to me.

My present invention has for its object the rendering of such pipes proof against the attempts of burglars to effect an entrance to a building by climbing said pipes; and to these ends my invention consists in covering the water-pipe with a shield of such construction that there shall be neither hand or foot hold.

To enable others to more fully understand the same, I will describe the construction and operation, referring by letters to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is an elevation, showing in detail a wall with an iron fire-pipe secured thereto, and provided with my improved shield. Fig. 2 is a crosssection at the line a; a: of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a similar section at the line 3 3 Fig. 1.

Similar letters indicate like parts in all the figures.

A represents the wall of a building, to which is secured the water-pipe B, which is cylindrical. 0 is a triangular shield covering said pipe, so that one of the sides of said shield shall lie flush against the wall. D is a modification of said shield, and having itsirear side flush with the wall, similar to C, but having the front rounded.

It will be observed that the pipe B, if unprotected by the shield, touches the wall only on one point of the circumference of said pipe, and forms a triangular space, a a, on each side, which would enable a burglar to climb the said pipe by-grasping it with his fingers, and inserting his toes between the pipe and wall. The shield G D effectually covers these triangular spaces, and consequently no hand or foot hold can be efl'ected.

I have shown the shields O D as made with a solid back, and perfectly enveloping the pipe 13; but, of course, they may be made with an open back, and secured to the wall by suitable ears or lugs, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I am aware that shields for water-spouts have been in use to protect them at or near their lower ends from injury, and do not therefore claim such; but

What I do claim, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-

A continuous shield for water or other conductin g pipes, constructed substantially as described, so that it shall be impossible to climb the same.
