WILLIAM B. McLEAN, OF HENSALL, ONTARIO, CANADA.
STOVEPIPE-THIMBLE.
' a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Hensall, in the county of Huron,
.in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stovepipe-Thimbles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a thimble or sleeve which extends through a wall or ceiling, particularly around a stove pipe where the latter extends through the wall or ceiling.
The objects of this invention are ;to provide a device that will completely prevent any excess of heat in the pipe from mjuring or otherwiseaflecting the surrounding wall or ceiling, or the carpet on the floor of the room above the ceiling, and thus provide a fire proof stove pipe thimble; one that will completely prevent any possibility of the dust in one room passing into the adjoining room into which the thimble o ens, thus rendering the stove pipe thimb e dust proof;.
one that is perfect in regulation because it can be readily, easily and instantly adjusted by a person in-either room or compartment into which it opens, to completely close the passage therethrough from one room into the other; one in which there is an air space between the stove pipe and the outside cylinder or barrel of the thimble, to convey the heat from one apartment to the other, and when one end of the thimble opens into a chimney or extends through an outside wall, provides ventilation; and one which is provided with registers at each end to regulate the passage ofheat from one compartment to another or to regulate ventilation; and at the same time provide a neat, simple strong and durable device, one that will be economical to manufacture, thus insuring its success commercially as well as for efliciency when in practical use.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more clearly appear as the nature of the invention is better understood; the same consists in the novel construction combination and arrangement of arts which will be hereinafter first fully set f drth and described and then pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1..is a central cross sectional view in perspective of a double barrel or cylinder stove pipe thimble illustrating my invention. Fig. 2. is a detail central cross sectional view Specificationof Letters Patent.

in perspective of one of th e registers. Fig. 3. 1s a detail central cross sectional view in perspective of the detachable head or end of the stove pipe thimble. Fig. 4. is an end In this view one half of the end cover is cut away. Fig. 5. is a central cross sectional view of a single barrel or single cylinder stove pipe thimble.
In the accompanying drawings ;-The numeral 1 designates the outside barrel or cylinder of the stove pipe thimble provided with the external rim flanges, a, and, b, at opposite ends, respectively.
The numeral 2 designates the annular head or end of the stove pipe thimble which is secured to the outside cylinder 1, preferably by folding the outer portion, 0, of said head or end over the outer portion of the rim flange, b, of said outside cylinder 1; the inner edge of said annular head or end 2, is provided with the flange, d, and in this head or end 2 the register openings 4 the supplemental openings 5 and the central or stove pipe openings 6 are formed.
7 designates an annular register which rests against andmoves freely on the head or end 2., and in said register 7the register 0 enings 8, the supplemental openings 9, an the central or stove pipe opening 10 are formed, which openings 8, 9 and 10 corres ond with the openings 4, 5 and 6 of the hea or end 2.
11 designates a cover or cap, the flange, 6, of which is fitted to and inserted in the central or stove pipe openings 6 and 10 in said head or end 2 and said register 7, respectively.
12 designates a removable annular head or end which is secured to the ring or collar 13, preferably by folding the outer portlon, f, of said removable head or end 12 over the outer portion of said ring or collar 13, and this rmg or collar 13 is provided with a flange 14, which is fitted to and inserted in the end of the outside cylinder 1 and said flange 14 and said outside cylinder 1, are so constructed and fitted that when said flange is insertedln the open end of said cylinder 1, their frictional contact will firmly hold them together said annular head or end 12 to permit its removal without injury. And in said removable annular head or end 12 the register openings 17, the supplemental openings 18, and
the removable head or end 12 is provided,
and said cap 25, is provided with a flange 26 which is fitted to and inserted in said central or stove pipe openings 19 and 23, in said removable head or end 12 and said register 20, respectively.
27 designates an inner barrel or cylinder shown in Fig. 5, which is preferable to use in the case of large stove pipe thimbles to brace and stiffen the same.
In order to facilitate the formation of the annular rim flanges, a, and b, on the outside cylinder 1, slits 28 are preferably formed in themas shown in Fig. 1. And to insure the holding of the inner barrel or cylinder 27 in place it may be bolted or otherwise secured to the flange 15 of the head or end 12.
The assembling of the different parts of the stove pipe thimble is clearly shown by the drawings, and when so assembled, said stove pipe thimble may be inserted in the ordinary or original stove pipe hole, there will be therefore no necessity for any extra or additional cuttin away of thewall, ceiling or carpet; and w en inserted in said stove pipe hole will not project nor will it be in the way of anything; and again when the stove pipe is projected through said thimble it stiffens and strengthens and protects said thimble. And there being an annular air space between the outside cylinder 1 and the stove pipe, or between said cylinder 1 and the inner cylinder 27, it will be practically impossible for the heat from the stove pipe to radiate across this annular air space and through the outside cylinder 1, to injuriously affect the surroundin wall, ceiling or carpet, thus rendering t is device fire proof. And this air space between the stove pipe and the outside cylinder 1, forms a passage which, when the registers 11 and 20 are open, permits the heat to pass from one apartment to another, and when one end of this thimble opens into a chimney or when it is located in an outside wall, provides an exit for ventilation. And by means of the registers, the passage of the heat from one compartment to another, or the ventilation may be readily, easily and instantly regulated, thus forming a perfect heat conveyer, regulator and ventilator. And when the registers are closed, all possibility of the dust passing from one compartment to the other will be avoided, thus rendering this device dust proof. And when there is no pipe in this thimble, by 'in serting the covers 11 and 25 in the central openings in the heads, it will be impossible for the dust from one room to pass into the other. Again the supplemental openings in the heads or ends and in the registers are so arranged that when the register openings are closed, said supplemental openings in said registers will be opposite the register openings in the head or end, and the supplen'lental openings in the head or end will be opposite the register openings in the register, this will permit currents of air to enter said air spa ee between the pipe and said outside cylinder, to further assist in preventing any excess of heat from the stove pipe from injurieusly affecting the surrounding wall, ceiling or carpet. And when the stove pipe is removed from the thimble, the overhanging edge, g, of the cap or cover will hold the registers 20 and 7 in place. And the register openings being formed practially the same width as the air space, these thimbles can be kept perfectly clean and free from dust. And one end of the thimble being formed removable they can be slipped into the stove pipe hole in the chimney after the latter is built.
The heads or ends of the thimble hold it in place, they do not therefore require any -na1ls, screw nails, springs or other holding means to hold them in place. These thimbles are made any length required, they will therefore fit neatly on the walls, ceiling or floors. And by ventilating into the chimney, are not affected by winds, dust or rain storms. And by permitting the heat of one room to pass into another, they economize and save fuel expenses. And by having double registers, one at each end, they are under instant control from either of the rooms or compartments. At the same time a simple, strong, durable inexpensive, clean, safe, and efficient device is provided.
Having thus described my invention, I claim;
1. In a device of" the class described, the combination with an outside cylinder provided at each end with an external flange, and heads secured to the flanges on each end. of said cylinder, one of which heads is detachable, and in each of which. heads a cen tral opening and a series of register and supplemental openings are formed, and a ring or collar to which said removable head is se cured, of an annular register adjacent to each head in which a series of register and supplemental openings are formed, substantially as shown and described and for the purpose specified.
