evfrrna HANGER-1 Application'filed"December 1451926, Serial No.154,784 i This invention relates to gutter hangers employed for the purpose of supportinggutters adjacent to the edges of roofs and the same has particular reference to animproved connection between the bridge and the suspension strap. I I
The invention comprehends a connection of the charactersetforth which eliminates riveting; which permits of the use of a bridge of narrower stock without detracting from the strength and which-greatly simplifies and reduces the expense incident to establishing connection between the bridge and the suspension strap.
With theabove recited and other objects in view reference is had to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which there is exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention which is in no way intended as a limitation upon the scope 1 of the appended'claimsas it is-to :be clearly understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of said claims may be resorted to when found ex 7 pedient. I l
In the drawings- I p v 3 Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of a gutter and a portion of a roof with the improved gutter hanger in applied position;
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the hanger on an enlarged scale taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional bottom plan view of the hanger taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig; 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary crosssectional view taken approximately on'the line 41- 1 of Fig.2; 7 r
Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken approximately on the line 55 of Fig. 2; p
Fig. 6 is-a fragmentary perspective view of. the lower end of the suspension strap prior to its attachment to the bridge.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference. the hanger which. of the onepiece type; illustrated in my prior United States Letters Patent No. 1,572,745, granted February 9, 1926, includes the bridge portion 10 which is of substantially inverted U- shaped cross-sectional configuration having atone end the bendable extension 13 adapted to be trained around under theygutter to constitute a cradle and formed at the opposite end with a slotted terminal 1 1 to receive the free extremity of the extension or cradle.
Thegsuspension strap 15' is notched at 16 at its lower end to provide a pair of furca-y tions 17-17,--which furcat-ionsare twisted a. quarter turn-from their normal position, thereby engaging the notch 16 to "conform to the external cross-sectionalshape of the bridge piece 10. A channel-shaped-clip" 18 is seated' again st the'under open side of the bridge piece'lO with the 'sideflanges 19 embracing the lower portion of the bridge piece;v At is medial portion the clip 18 is I increased in width and is provided withslots 20 adapted to .receive therethrough the lower ends of "thefur-cations, which lowerends' or extremities 21 are bent upwardly to provide retaining clawswhich in addition to tightly drawing or impinging the upper end of the notched portion 16in? to contact. with 'the' upperbight, portion of thebridge piece 10, clamps and binds the clip 18 in place. Thisforms arigid locking connection between the suspension strap 15 and the bridge piece. It will be further noted that the twisted lower end 22 formed atthe junctureof the fu'rcations' with the so v main body 'ofthe" 'strap, strengthens I the strap 'atits weakest point andinsures bend ing of the same at a point immediately above the notched lower end.
It will also be noted that a narrower gage of inwardly.
Vhatis claimed'isz' 1. In a'gutterhanger,a bridge piece of inverted U-shaped cross-sectional configuration, a suspension strap having a bifurcated.
lower end, the defining fur-cations twisted laterally outward tostraddle the bridge piece, a slotted clip underlying the bridge piece, the slotted portions of which receive channel construction'having an opening at the lower side, a suspension strap having fine locking claws, and a slotted clip underlying the bridge piece and having the claws engaged through the slotted portions thereof.
of material for forming the hanger maybe I employed without detracting from the strength of the structure .in that the claws.
or extremities 21are bent outwardly instead I a bifurcated. lower end, the furcations of vwhich are twisted laterally a quarter turn andturned outwardly and upwardly to dc 3. In a 'gutter hanger, a bridge piece of channel constructlon having'an openlng at the lower side, a suspension strap having a bifurcated lower end,athe furcations of which are twisted laterally'aquarter turn andturned outwardly and upwardlytode- .fine locking claws, and a slotted clip underlying the bridge piece and having the claws engaged through the slotted portions there of, the twisted portion of the suspension strap at the juncture with thelocking claws serving to strengthen the strap "at the point ofconnection with the bridge piece whereby to insure bending of the strap at a point above the bifurcated lower end. i v
4. In a gutter hanger, an inverted channel-shapedbridge piece, a suspension strap, and means for establishing a rigid connection between the lower end of the suspension strap and thebridge piece, comprising a notched lower end of the gutter strap dea Lining, turcations laterally twisted outwardly and upwardly and bent to provide locking and a slotted clip underlying the, bridge piece and receiving through the slot-ted'pon tionsth-ereoi' the laterally'twisted ouwardly and upwardly bent turcations.
6. A'connection between the suspension strap and bridge p ece of a gutter hanger, comprislng a bifurcated lower end ol the suspension strap having outwardly and up wardly bent furcations', and aslotted clip underlying the bridge piece and receiving theretlirough the outwardly and upwardly bent furca-tions. 4
7. In a gutter hanger, including a gutter embracing element having a transverse I bridge-piece and a suspension strap, a means of connectionbetween said suspension strap and bridge piece, comprising a. bifurcated lower end of saidsuspension strap: straddling'the bridge piece, the ,t-urcation ter- ,7
ininals being outwardly and upwardly bent, and a slotted clip underlying. the bridge piece and receiving the outwardly and up wardly bentfurcation terminals.
84.111 a gutter hanger, includniga gutter embracing element having a bridge piece disposed transversely of the upper opene'nd of the gutter and a suspension strap; a
means of connection between said suspension strap and bridge piece comprisinga bifurcated lower end of said suspension .ustrap straddling the bridge piece and defining furcatio'nsprovided'with outwardly and upwardly bent ter1ninals,-.and achannel-shaped clip :en'ibracingly, engaging; the under portion 01 the brid'ge pieceat its opposite ends,
with a medial portion enlarged and slotted fl and receiv ng therethrough the outwardly and upwardly bent turcation terminals.
