ARNOLD I. MASON, GEORGE OHAMBERLIN, AND HENRY W. OHAMBERLIN, OF OLEAN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORS TO GEORGE OHAMBERLIN 8Z5 SON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR PRESSING HORSE-COLLAR PADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1168,091, dated May 11, 1875 application filed April 10, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARNOLD P. MASON, GEORGE OHAMBERLIN, and HENRY W. CHAM- BERLIN, of Olean, in the county ofOattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Pressing Horse- Oollar Pads, of which the following is a speci fication:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of our improved machine for pressing horse-collar pads and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1, showing side view of center-piece and follower.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention relates to an improved machine for pressing leather and sheet metal into shape for the manufacture of horsecollar pads by a rapidly-operated and adjustable mechanism.
The invention consists of screw-adjusted side jaws, sliding intermediate center-piece, and screw-follower, corresponding in shape with the center-piece to press the leather and sheet-metal tree of the pads into shape thereon.
In the drawing, A represents the supporting-frame of our improved machine for pressin g the leather and sheet-metal parts of horsecollar pads, which support, on the lower longitudinal connecting-piece, the adjustable side jaws B. The jaws B slide, by means of setscrews 0, in guide-grooves of the connectingbar, and are readily set to the width of the pads to be pressed. The face of the jaws is curved for turning up the leather and metal backing at the sides, and is provided with central guide-ribs a for guiding and seating the center-piece D, which slides by its shank in a perforation, b, of the supporting-bar. The sides of the center-piece are grooved or recessed for the guide-ribs a. The head of the center-piece is formed'to correspond with the shape and curvature of the horse-collar pad to be formed thereon. A suitable cushioning-sprin g, D, is applied to the under side of the supportingbar, to throw the centerpiece in upward direction after the pad is formed, and admit the ready taking off of the same. The follower E corresponds in shape to the center-piece, and is applied thereto by a vertical screw-bolt, E, of frame A, the leather and metal blanks being placed on the jaws for the pressing action of the follower.
Any size of pads may be pressed by inserting different-sized center-pieces and followers, and setting the jaws to the width of the same.
The leather and metal tree of the pad are thus pressed into shape, and fitted exactly to each other, in a manner that expedites and facilitates the manufacture of pads and similar articles.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a machine for shaping and pressing collar-pads, the adjustable curved-face side jaws, sliding and spring-cushioned center-piece and follower in combination, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The adjustable sidejaws, having projecting guide-ribs, in combination with the grooved and sliding center-piece and the perforated supporting-piece of frame, for guiding head and shank of centerpiece, as set forth.
