IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR FITTING COUNTERS TO LA'STS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,306, dated August 31, 1875; application filed April 2, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Lonrs Core, of St. Hyacin the, of the Province of Quebec, of the Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Machine for Fitting Boot or Shoe Counters or Heel-Stifl'eners to Lasts; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top View, Fig. 2 a front elevation, Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a transverse section, of the said machine.

My invention consists in a lastcarriage, lateral jaws, a presser, and a roller, arranged and provided with mechanism for supporting and operating them, as hereinafter set forth, when the said carriage may be provided with a last or heel counter shaper, all being essentially as hereinafter explained.

In such drawings, A denotes a frame or table, slotted lengthwise, as shown at a, to receive and guide a carriage, B, in its rectilinear movements, produced by a crank, O, and a grooved cam, B. The latter is attached to the carriage by an arm, I), the crank being fixed to the inner end of a rotary shaft, 0, ar-

ranged as represented. The carriage supports a last, D, or a former of suitable shape, which, by the movements of the carriage, is to be drawn between the lateral jaws E E, and against a presser, F, and underneath a roller, G. The jaws are fixed to carriers H H that slide horizontally through standards I I, and are provided with springs K to force the jaws toward each other. The roller G is also supported in a carrier, L, which slides vertically in a standard or frame, M, and is furnished with springs N N to press it downward, all being as represented. The presser F is a curved spring projecting from the carrier L in manner as shown.

On applying a counter to the heel of the last or former D, and next moving the carriage inward, such counter will be forced against the presser, which will set the counter down upon the soleof the last. I The carriage continuing to move the counter by the jaws will be crimped ordrawn against the sides of the heel of the last, and, finally, as the counter may be carried beneath the roller, the latter will roll down upon the sole of the last, the part lapping or to lap thereon, the whole causing the counter to fit closely to the heel In a machine for shaping boot and shoe counters, with reference to lasts, as described, the last or former D and its operative carriage B, in combination with the lateral-yielding jaw E E, and the verticallyyielding presser F, and roller G, being substantially as specified.
