Urrea STA-s WILLIAM HERSKOVITZ OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO PEERLESS LIGHT COMfi PANY, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOISLA CORPORATION OF MAINE.
' ATTACHMENT PLUG.
Application led February 24, 1925. Serial No. 11,046.
This inventionl relates to attachment plugs ot' that type which employ a pair of contact fingers 'for making electrical connection with `tric lamps or other electric devices.` lVith .this and other objects and advantages 1n view, this invention consists in theV several novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the two partsof a separable attachment plug disconnected from each other andshowing a simple em,
bodiment of the presentinvention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an end view of the plug looking in the directio'n'of the arrow 2 in Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;/ Fig. 4 is avertical section taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2, and Fig. G is a front elevation of a wall receptacleof ordinary form.
Referring ,to said drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the present invention, the reference character 10 designates the plug body portion of a separable attachment plug /and contains the usual threaded shell. Associated withsaid body portion 10, is the companion part 11, commonly called the cap and which forms the subject matter of this invention. In the drawing, the body and cap are shown detached from each other.
They are coupled by inserting the contact fingers 12 of the cap into holes in the body portion 10.
The cap or plug 11 comprises a body 13 formed of non-conducting material and containing a vcentral opening 14 for the conductor cords 15. One end of the body 13 is recessed as at 16 and secured to the bottom face of the recess, as by screws 17, are the two contact lingers 12, which make electric connection with the contact members of the plug member 10 or of an ordinary wall receptacle 25 (see Fig. 6). Extending back from the bottom face of the recess `16 are two slots 18 into which project two contact pieces 19 which form continuations ofthe contact fingers 12. For convenience said contat pieces 19 may be formed of separate/peces secured to the contact fingers 12. As shown they are formed with bent portions 20 that are arranged to lie on the ,bottom face of the recess, and the contact fingers l2mhavefbent, arcuate portions 21 which overlap'the bent portions 20 of the contact pieces 19 and contact with them. Screws 17 extend through the bent portions 20, 21, and enter threaded sleeves that are embedded in the body 13. In
the ends of the arcuate portions 2l of the contact fingers 12 are binding screws 22, which fasten the ends of the conductor cords to the contact fingers 12.
The slots 18 open out through one or more sides of the body 13 and the ends 19a of the contact pieces 19 extend out towards the open ends of said slots 18, in position to make contact with the contact fingers of other plugs 26, as is clearly seen in Fig. 3.
Preferably, the side wall of the body 13 is made flat at the places where the slots `18 open out, and for the sakeof appearance, the body may be made hexagonal at this place. This arrangement permits other plugsto be plugged into the device, whereby several extension cords may run from one plug. The device may be plugged into a wall receptacle or into the body portion of a separable attachment plug and furnished a convenient means for running several extension cords from one plug.
More or less variation of the exact details of construction is possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; I ,desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact form of the construction shown and described, but intend, in the following claims, to point out all of the invention disclosed herein. i
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An extension cord attachment plug, .comprising a body formed of non-conducting material andhaving a central opening extending lengthwise therethrough from' jecting from one end of said body, and a pair of contact pieces in electrical contact with said Contact fingers and extending into and in line with said slots in position for engagement at the sides of the body with the contact fingers of other attachment plugs. l
2. An extension cord attachment plug, comprising a. ,bod .p formed of non-conducting material and aving a recess at one end and a central opening extending length- Wise through the plug` from end to end for the reception of the extension cord and a pair of parallel slots which opren from said recess and extend transversely of said centra] opening and open out through two sides of the body there being one slot disposed at each side of said central opening, a pair of parallel contact lingers having attachment means for the extension cord and secured to the bottom of said recess and projecting from the recessed end of the body, and a pair oi' T shaped contact pieces in electrical contact with said contact lingers and having the cross member of the T extending into and in line with said slots in position for engagement at the sides of the body with the Contact lingers of otller'attahinent plugs.
