FRANKLIN DOMINICK, OFKNEW YORK, N. Y.
PLUG ATTACHMENT. v
Application filed March 23, 1922. Serial No. 546,185.
To all .whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN DOMINICK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Plug Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to electrical fixtures and particularly to an improved connector or plug attachment wherein different forms of plugs or connecting members may be properly accommodated for connecting a source of current to the device using the current.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved connector or plug struc-ture wherein feed wires may be readily connected to either a screw socket or a plug socket.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved connecting device having a connecting contact formed either as a pair of plugs or as a screw Structure and means for receiving distributing wires having plugs mounted thereon.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a connecting structure for electric circuits wherein a plurality of independent feed wires may be connected to a single In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a side view of a plug attachment or connector embodying the invention, certain parts being broken away for better illustrating the invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the attachment or connector shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through Figure 1 approximately on line 3-3.
Figure 4 is a sectional view through Figure 2 approximately on line 4-4.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing a modified form of the invention, the broken away part being taken on line 5 5 of Figure 6.
Figure 6 is an edge view of-the'structure shown in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a sectional view through Figure 5 on line 7-7.
Figure 8 is a plan view of the blank used as a contact plate in the structures illustrated in Figures 5 to 7.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the body or casing shown in Figure 7 Referrlng to the accompanying drawings by numeral, 1 indicates the complete attachment or connector designed to receive the contact blades 2 of the respective plugs 3 and at the same time be capable of connection to a pair of sockets designed to receive the knife contacts 4 or to a screw socket designed to receive the screw plug 5. The screw plug 5 is provided with a .pair Yof sockets of a well known construction for receiving the knife contacts 4, said knife contacts being therefore capable of engaging the sockets of plug 5 or engaging permanent sockets in a fixture or wall where knife receiving sockets are provided instead of screw plug receiving sockets.
The attachment or connector 1 is provided with a body having a central section 6 and side sections 7 and 8 formed preferably of insulating material and rigidly clamped together by bolts, rivets or other Vsecuring means 9. The section 6 is provided with laterally extending lugs 10 and 1 1 which are adapted to receive the ends of the Contact blades 4, said contact blades having suitable apertures. A pair of contact plates 12 and 13 are provided for the section 6 and are formed with apertures so that 'they may fit over the extensions or lugs 10 and 11. rlhe inner faces of the sections 7 and 8 are provided with contact plates 14 and 15 which are specially constructed as shown in Figures 3 and 4 so that they will each be provided with a depending member 16 having an aperture for fitting over the respective lugs 10 and 11 and each plate is also provided with sockets 17 as indicated particularly in Figures 2 and 4.
It will be noted that the knife contacts 4 are arranged with one end between the respective plates 12 and 14 and 13 and 15 so that a good contact is always maintained between the knife. contacts and the respective contact plates. It will also be noted that in addition to the sockets 17, the contact plates 12 and.14 and 13 and 15 respectively are spaced apart and form a smallv segmental chamber therebetween whereby the knife contacts 2 of the respective plugs 3 may be positioned at any point around the arcshaped or curved face 18 of the connector 1. If the knife contacts 2 should be positioned at right angles to the contactplates 12 to 15, they are forced in one of the sockets 17.
In the construction shown in Figures 1 to 4,' means have been provided for three plugs having transversely arranged knife contacts and ample Ispaceis provided for plates though this is not absolutely necessary.
If desired, a space could be provided for more than three plugs 3 or less than three.
In the construction shown in Figures 4 to 8, means have been presented which are designed to receive two plugs 3. In this form of the invention, there is no segmental chamber between the respective plates as shown in Figure 2 but on the contrary only the T-shaped sockets 20. In this form of the invention instead of the connector or attachment 1 being divided into three sections as shown in Figures 2 and 3, the device is divided into two sections along the line 21 instead of at rightangles thereto as shown in Figure 2. By reason of this construction, the bolt or rivet 22 must extend as shown in dotted lines in Figure 5 instead of at right angles thereto as shown in Figure 3. Each of therespective sections 23 and 24 are identical so that the description of one will apply to both.
Section 24 (Fig. 7) is provided with openings 25 and 26'for accommodating Ithe knife contacts 4, said knife contacts being riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the respective contact plates 27 and 28. Each of these plates when on a blank is formed as shown in Figure 8. vWhen this blank is bent along the line 29, a substantially U-shaped structure in cross section is provided and inserted into suitable sockets in the section 24. A recess is provided for accommodating the depressed portions 30 which form the sockets for the reception of the contact knives of plugs 3. In this form of the invention, only two plugs may be connected to the attachment or connector 1 while in Figure 1 three may be connected though it is to be understood that any desired number may be provided for according to the requirements of any particularl case.
The arrangement of the attachment l with the knife contacts 4 and the screw plug 5, permits the'device to be. connected to any of the conventional sockets now in common vuse and at the same time permits the use of a .number of plugs 3 from one source of supply.
What I claim is In an attachment or connector of the character described, a body formed with a pair of parallel slots, each slot having a plurality of notches extending at right angles to the respective slots# the notches of one slot being opposite the notches in the other slot, a pair of Contact plates for each 'of said slots,'one plate on each slot being formed with laterally' extending portions tting into the respective notches of said slots whereby contact prongs set parallel to each other or at'right angles to each other may be readily inserted, and a terminal for each pair of plates.
.FRANKLIN DOMINICK.
