Application bled December 26,1822. Serial No. coasts.
This invention relates to improvements in safety razor blade sharpeners.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a safety razor blade sharpener which can be easily and cheaply manufactured.
A further object of the invention is to provide a slab or block which is adapted for sharpening safety razor blades having either one or two cutting edges. A further object of the invention is to provide a means of the class described which makes it very simple to'. sharpen or whet safety razor blades.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety razor blade sharpener in which there are no moving or mechanical parts to get out of order.
A further object of the invention is toprovide a sharpener of the class described which is of ve simple construction, is strong and durab e, and is well adapted for the urposes described.
ith the above and other objects in view, 2 the invention consists of the improved safety razor blade sharpener and its parts and combinationsas set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
. In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference numerals indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. l is a lan view of the improved safety razor b ade sharpener showing a blade in position; and
Fig. .2 is an end view thereof and on a lar er scale.
eferring now more particularly to the drawing, it will appear that the'invention consists of a slab 5 which is composed. of oil-stone, sand-stone, unpolished glass, or any other similar material or composition which is adapted for sharpening steel. The slab is preferably rectangular in shape and of a convenient breadth. The length and width of the slab are unimportant, except that they must somewhat exceed the length and width of a safety razor blade in order to insure the efiicient operation thereof.
lhe feature of the device resides in the concave surface 6 of the slab and said concavity extendslongitudinally with the slab.
The curvature of the concavity is important in that the side portions, of the concavity must slope sufficiently to conform with the bevel'8 on the edges of a blade 9. However, if the concavity slope is greater than the bevel of the razor blade edge, it will only necessitatemore pressure on the blade during the sharpening process.
To sharpen a blade, the blade is placed on the slab as shown in Fig. 1. As appears in Fig. 2 the edges of the blade will rest on the downwardly inclined portions of 'the concave surface of the slab, while there will be a space left .between the midortion of the blade and the lower part of the concavity. The operator then exerts a slight pressure on a medial portion of the blade and at the same time, he gives the blade a rotary movement over the concave surface of the slab and the blade edges will thereby become sharpened, the slope of the concave surface compensating for the bevel of the blade edges and insuring a contact at all times. It is also obvious, that single edge blades may be sharpened in the same manner.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the improved safety razor blade sharpener is of very simple construction, and is well adapted for the purpose described.
What I claim as my invention is: I
1. As a new article of manufacture, a safety razor blade sharpener consisting of'a flat slab of abrading material having a concave sharpening surface of greater width than the width of an ordinary safety razor blade.
- 2. As a new article. of manufacture, a sharpening device suited for use with any form of safety razor blades and consisting of a flat slab of abrading material having a longitudinally surface, any ortion of which may be readily utilized fiir the sharpening of a safety razor blade.
3'. A sharpening device, consisting of a slab-like body provided with a concave,
extending concave sharpening abrasive sharpening face to permit the disthan the width of a razor blade, the radius position of a razor blade on any portion of the curve of said face corres ending to thereof whereby a blade may be manually the bevel of the edge of the b ade to be 10 A rotated over sand face. sharpened thereon in any sition of use. 5 4. A sharpening device,- consisting of a In testimony whereof,I a 1: my signature.
slab ,like body provided with a concave abrasive sharpening face oi greaterwidth 1 r JOHN VAUGHAN.
