1 SAFETY nnlvrcn 7 Application filed July 29,
This invention relates generally to safety devices for a press or thelilte; and has for its main object and feature the production .of means whereby the presscannot, in case the operator keeps his foot on the treadle, repeat its cycle of operations, unless, atc, the same time, bothh'ands of the operator are outside thezone of danger. 1
' In the 'accompanying drawings the invention is disclosedin a concrete and preferred or Fig. 1 is a general view. of a punching press or the like with the device of the .m-' ventiQll shown in position.
Fig. 2 is afragmentary view of the framework of the machine 'sho wingthe two push buttons for establishing a circuit to latch the Connection from the foot ,treadle.
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan viewon the plane of'line 3 3 of Fig. y k Fig; 4 is a verticalsectional view on the plane of line 4.4 of Fig. 3. i H
Fig. 5 is a diagram showing the electrical connection. I
1 is a punching press, or the like, inwhlch member 2 drops, or is otherwise actuatedas by cam means, when a clutchis thrown n by merely controlling rod 8 by means of foot treadle or actuating means allin amanner well understood. I I
Gontrolling'rod 3' consists of two members 5 andG, one of which, in this case 6, is provided with a casing 7 and one of which, in this case 5, is provided with a latching member 8 that extends into thecasing; There is a complementary latching member, within the casing, consisting here of two jaws 9 pivotally supported at 10. Suitable-means such as armature 11, pivoted at 12, is provided whereby, when magnet 13is energized, said jaws are brought against and close around latch 8 so that, when the treadle is depressed, member 6, acting through the latch members, will pull down member 5 and The means preferably used to energize magnet 13 is an electric circuit 14 controlled by two push buttons 15 on the framework, both of which must be actuated to close the circuit and which are so spaced that the operator must use both hands and thus keep the latter out of the danger zone. I i i The character of the machine to which this attachment is applied ispreferably such that 1925,. Serial no 46,755.
when the machine is started it goes through acycle of operations and then stops. It will be understood, however, that, ordinarily, if
the] operator keeps his foot on thetreadle and thus in active position, the press'will repeat its cycle, of operations indefinitely.
This cannot occur? with the presentconstruc 'tion, unless at the same time both push buttons are in, in'which case'no injury'can be sustained by the operator; and it willbe observed. that should the operator 'absentmin'declly remove one'o-r both-hands'from' the push buttons, the magnet will become deenergized and therefore cam'l 6 on latch 8 will, spread the jaws apart when, it rises under compulsion of the automatic throwout clutch of the 'press'andconsequently the v 1 press will stop even 'thoughthe treadle reinains depressed. v her 8 has risen out of the casing, the operator removes his foot from "the treadlefsaid When, "after latch mem I cam 16,having two faces,'will,if the circuit has accidentally been closed, separate the aws when it again enters the casing-. Armature ll falls by gravity into the position in dicated in Fig. 3 so that whenever the circult is broken there is nothing to compel the aws to remain in their closed position; It
follows: therefore, that when thejcirc uit is". broken and the treadle'd'epressed, member 6 will move downwardly but member 5 will remain stationarypnd. the press will not op erate.
In case it s desired for any reason to render the safety device inactive, an authorized person may insert key Hand turn locking member 1.8 which "will keep the armature in a position-where the jaws will remain closed. r
I claim: I e 1. A safety device fora machine of the character set forth including: a connecting rod consisting of .two members, an 'actuat ing device for one of said members, a casingcarriedby one of said members, a latch engaging member on the other of said members to enter the" casing, a complementary latching member .withinv the casing, and.
