Therefore, I have provided means whereby the axis of the tympan clamp may be moved inwardly, when desired. to a point where the clamp can be turned back within the cylinder and thus leave the slot unobstructed. it being understood that the axis :is brought back to its normal position when the leading edge of the tympan is to be clamped.
A practical embodiment oi my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l represents a detail view in side clevation of so much of an impression vcylinder as includes my invention.

The shell ol the impression cylinder is denoted by 1 and its ends byQ. The shell 1 of the impression cylinder has a. narrow longitudinal slot 3 therethrough. The cylinder is also shown as being, provided with the usual shifting tympan .mechanism whichv forms no part of the present invention and will not be specifically described herein.
p Proceeding to describe the tympan clamp: The bushings 4 are rotatably mounted in the ends 2 of the cylinder, said bushings having lock plates 5 fixed theretmeXterior to the cylinder ends, as. for instance. by countersunk screws 6. The tympan clamp 10, which coacts with` oneV Vwall ot' the slot 3 to clamp the 'leading edge of the make-ready tympan thereto, is provided with trunnions 11-and 12 which are eccentrically mounted in the bores of the bushings 4 at `the opposite ends vof the cylinder.v The trunnion 12 is provided with a lever member 13. fixed to its end, as, for instance, by a set screw 1li. The lever member 13 and thereby the tympan clamp 10 may be rocked, for instance, by providing the lever Amember with a hole 15 for receiving a removable lever 416.
The lock plates 5 and therebythe bushings 4 may be rocked` as, for inst-ance, by providing' the lock plates with holes 17 for the reception ot' a removable lever 18.`
rllhe free end ot a spring 19, secured to one end oit the cylinder as at 20, is arranged to engage the lever member 13 for holding the tympan clamp 10 in its operative' position.
To release the tympan clamp I first disengagje the free end ot the spring- 19 from its locking engagement with the lever member 13, allowing the parts to assume the positions shown in-Fifr. 5. The nuts 9 are then loosened on their bolts 8 to unlock the bushing` plates 5. The levers 18 may then be used to rock the plates and thereby the bushings to move the trunnions 11 and 12 of the finger 10 inwardly into the position shown in Fig'. 6. The clamp 1.0 may then be rocked into the position shown in Fig. 7 to clear the slot 3 from all obstruction. lVhen the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 7, it is obvious that the clamp 10 may be turned back into the cylinder as far as necessary for the insertion and removal of the make-ready tympan. It will be understood that when the leading' edge of the make-ready tympan is to be clamped to the side wall ot the slot 3 the lock plates and their bushings are brought back to their operative position and there locked by tightening;` the nuts 9. The clamp is then closed, bringing' the spring` 1 9 into its position for holding the clamp in its closed position until again released.
It is evident that various changes may be parting from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence, I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, butl. An impression cylinder, bushings rot-atably adjustable therein, a tympan clamp having trunnions eccentrically mounted in said bushings, look plates carried byy the bushings and mea-ns tor llocking the plates and thereby the bushings in their operative positions.

An impression cylinder, bushings rotatably adjustable therein, a tympan clamp having trunnions eceeutrically mounted in said bushings, lock plates carried by the bushings, means Ylor locking the plates and thereby the bushings in their operative positions, av lever member carried by one of the trunnions tor use in rocking the clamp and' spring means engaging the lever member for locking the clamp in its operative position.
5. An impression cylinder having a narrow longitudinal slot through its shell and a tympan clamp mounted to be moved bodily inward and rocked into a position within the cylinder to clear said slot.
