LATE Ews nEvrc Eon PRINTIN MACHINES Application filed October-25, 1929, Serial No. 402,501, and in Great Britain November ,1s2s.'
This invention relatesto late news printing devices used on rotary newspaper print-' ing machines. I
The object of the present invention is to provide alate news printing apparatus, the
formcylinder of which can readily be turned to a convenient-position to change the late news printing form without moving the main printing cylinders.
' According to the present invention there is provided in combination with an impression cylinder, one or more late news form cylinders each of which are adapted to receive one or more fudge boxes, and'tocooperate with the impression cylinder. 7 Means are also provided for driving the said form cylinder in synchronism with the impression cylinder, means for moving said form cyl-' inder and impression cylinder into and out of impression relation with each other, for connecting and disconnecting the form cylinder to and from the driving means.
Means are provided for rotating the late pews form cylinder whenthis latter is'moved out'of impression and driving connection, for
moving the said cylinder into convenient positions for the loading, removal and replacement of the various fudge boxes.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a View partly in section showing the late news device, and a portion of the printing machine as viewed fromthe side of the machine;
Figure 2 is'a plan view drawn to a smaller scale, showing the mechanism as viewed in the direction of arrow 2 of Figure 1;
- Figure 3 is a View mostly in section, show-- ing the clutch mechanism as seen in the direcv 2, the parts 1n-section of arrow 3, of Figure tion being as viewed on the line AA of Figure 2;
Figure 4 1s a'view of the mechanism "for moving the late news form cylinders into and out of impression relation, theviewbeing shown as seen in the direction of the arrow4:,ofFigure1; s I
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view showing the late news form cylinder in impression relation with the impression cylinder, and in a g 60 contact with the inking mechanism; and
Figure 6 is a diagrammatic View similar to Figure 5, but showingthe late news form cylinder movedout of impression relation.
bushings 5, rotatably supported in the. frame 6 of the machine; one of the bushings 5 being provided at each end of the shaft 3, and one intermediate its ends. The bushings are each formed or provided with teeth 7 which mesh with the teeth of quadrant gears 8, fastened to a shaft 9, that is rotatably'supporte parallel to the shaft 3.
Fastened to the shaft 9, at a point adj acent to the central bushingis an arm 10, slotted for the reception of a block 11, that is screw threaded to 7 receive an adjusting bolt 12,
which is rotatably but not slidably mounted in the end walls of the slot. The position of the block 11 in the slot, is capable thereby ofadjustment, and provides means for adjust:
ment between the late news form cylinders '1, 2 and the impression cylinder 4, that is independent of the throw off mechanism hereinafter described.
Pivotally mounted at one end of a pin 13, carried by a block 11, is a link 14, the other end of which ispivotally connected to an arm 15 fastened to a short shaft 16, to which an operating arm 17 is secured. The extreme positions of the arm 17 are limited by pins 18 on the frame that are adapted to engage a lug 19, formed on the arm 17.
Onone end of the shaft'3, is provideda manually operatable clutch 20, that "may'have a pin 20 and be operated by a hand lever 21,
for connecting or disconnecting the shaft. 3', to and'from a gear wheel 22, that is recessed to form a seat forthe pin 20' andis loosely mounted on the shaft 3.v The gear 22 is in 'mesh with the flanged gear 23, which is secured to the shaft of impression cylinder 4.
The clutch member 20 slides on a feather 3" on the shaftB, and the lever 21 is secured to V a shaft 8 which turns in the bracket B and carries a pin 21" which engages the roove Gin the clutch member 20. a
At the other end of the shaft 3, there is provided an inching mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel 24, secured to the shaft 3, and engaged by a pawl 25, pivotally mounted on an operating lever 26.
The late news cylinders are inked by an inking roller 27, in contact with an ink cylinder 28, that is engaged by the usual distributing rollers 29 and supplied with ink by a ductor roller30, from afountain roller 31.
'l he fiange onthegear 23 engages the sides of the gear 22 and holds it in position on the shaft when the clutch is released. Gear 23 meshes with gear 22, that is secured to a running shaftv of the machine thus providing a means for driving the late news form cylin- (1611..
If desired an additional late news device may be arranged to operate in connectionwmh thG-IIDPI QSSIOILCylIIIdGE 4'. Such an arrangement is shown in outline in Figure 1,
wherein the cylinder 33, corresponds with.
cylinder 1,.roller 3lwith roller 27, ink cylinden 35 with 28, and rollers 36, 37 and: 38 respectively with! rollers 29, 30 and 31-.
In. operatiomiwhen it is desired to change the fudge boxes on either of the late news cylinders or alter the type therein, the opcrating arm-c 1.7i is rocked to'rotate the eccentric bushings 5,,throughthe quadrant 8 and gear 7 the bushings being 'so arranged as to move the-late news cylinders 1 and 2, out of operating engagement with the impression cylinder, 4,,and the inking roller 27, as shown in Figure 6.
The clutch 20 is then; operated to discern nect the shaft, 3" fromt-he gear 22, and the apparatus isthen ready for the attachment or removalof the fudge boxes,.or any desiredalteratinnof thelate news form.. When more than! one fudge box is used on the late news cylinders,,after thefirst one has been attached or removed, the cylinders arev rotated to-bring them; into a: convenient position-for attachingor removing another fudge box, by rocking the inching lever 26, this beingeasily effected. by hand since the shaft 3lis disconnected, from its driving mechanism.
vhen'the fudge boxes have been attached or removed and replaced, the pin clutch 2O isaotuatedtoconnect the shaft 3 to the gear 22. and. the operating-lever 1 7 is rocked to cause the eccentricbushings 5 tomove the late news cylinders land 2'into contact with the, impression, cylinder l, and. with the ink ing rollers2.7,.as-shown in Figures 1 and 5.
It will-:be seen-that with anapparatus made in accordance with this invention, a simple arrangement is provided for loading or removing and replacing fudge boxes without inching the whole machine, and; that ac- (38851130 alliparts of the late news cylinders may beihadrw-it-hout thenecessity'for moving the main printing cylinders.
It will; be understood that instead of the fudge boxes referred to herein that are used to hold type slugs, that the invention is equally adaptable to the form of late news device in which stereotype plates replace the fudge boxes.
