GHANGEA'BLE TYPE.
Application filed May 16, 1925- Serial No. 30,755.
The present invention relates to What I term a changeable slug for use on commer cial printing presses, and is of particular advantage in situations where bill heads,
purchase orders, or any like forms are printed in series of originals, duplicates, triplicates, and quadruplicates.
An important object of the invention is to provide a changeable slug of this nature 1 which when assembled in the chase it may be changed to print a different word. Thus originally it would be set to print the word original, then set to print the word duplicate, etc, without unlocking the form.
l5 Another very important object of the invention is to provide an article of this nature which will eliminate the lost time in making changes in type from original to duplicate etc; one that is exceedingly simple in its construction, strong, durable,
efiicient and reliable in use, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
\Vith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangementof parts as will be hereinafter more fully described In) and claimed.
In the drawing 2- Figure 1 is an edge View of the device.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough, and
Figure 3 is a transverse section therethrough.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that 1 designates the carrier which has a parallelepiped body provided with a slot 2 extending from one longitudinal edge to the other longitudinal edge. A type block 3 is square in formation exactly type high, and has a central opening 4. The edges of the type block 3 are provided with printing elements 5 projecting therefrom for forming suitable indicia such as the words original, duplicate, triplicate, and quadruplicate. A pivot pin 6, preferably in the form of a rivet extends through so the carrier 1 to sever the median transverse dimension thereof and to be disposed between the median longitudinal dimension thereof, and one longitudinal edge. This pivot pin 6 extends through the opening 4:
of the type block 3 so that said type block 3 is rotatably mounted in the slot 2 and when one of its edges is disposed inparallelism. with the longitudinal edges of the hold er or carrier 1, the printing elements 5 on one edge will be exposed in an active position, such as those which are shown in the upper portion of Figure 2. The device may then be placed in the chase and held in the usual manner. When it is desired to change the block it is only necessary to loosen 05 the clamp in order that the chase may be slightly raised and the block then rotated to expose another of the elements 5 printing different indicia as is indicated above.
It is thought that the construction, operation, utility, and advantages of this article will now be clearly understood by those skilled in the printing art, without a more detailed description. It is apparent that changes in the details of construction, in 7 the sizes, in the materials, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resort d to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A changeable slug of the class described including a block body adapted to be re ceived in a platen press form as ordinary pipe, said body being in the form of a carrier having a parallelopipe body provided with a slot, a block of polygonal formation having printing elements formed on its edges and provided with a central opening, and a pivot pin extending through the body with its axis disposed between the median longitudinal dimension and one longitudinal edge thereof, said pin extending through the opening in the block so that said block may be rotated in the body forming the carrier, a portion of said block extending beyond said longitudinal edge of the carrier so that the slug will be type high in any and all of the positions of the block, the distance between the axis of the pin and the printing elements on the block being equal to the distance between the axis of the p111 and the other longitudinal edge of the carrier so that the printing elements adjacent said other longitudinal edge Will be substantially coplanar therewith and therefore will abut the inside of the frame to lock the block against rotation when the slug is in 10 the frame.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature.
