ADJUSTABLE QUAnnArr-ron rnnfrrNe-rimssns,
Application filed March 6,1918. Serial o. 220,712.
To aZZwhom it may concern: 3
\ Be it known that I, ANTHONY SoArloomo. a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Adjust able Quadrats for. Printing-Presses, of"
which the following is afull, clear, and we act specification. V
This invention relates to printing presses. and especially to means for supporting cards or blanks in proper position on thetympan of the platen to insure the impression being" made straight on said card or blank.
It is the aim of theinvention to provide supporting means of thiskind, to be hereinafter called quadrats, which are adjustable to bring the card or blank into eXactparallel relation to the type, irrespective of the precise positions of said quadrats on the tym pan. Consequently, when'this invention is used, it is not necessary to place the qu adrats so carefully on the tympan, and once placed it is not necessary to move them but simply to adjust them in order to accommodate the card or blank to an uneven or slightly inclined line ti type. a
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically de-. fined at the end of the description. v
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1. is a plan view of a part of the tympan of a platen of a printing press,
showing a pair of the adjustable quadrats mounted thereon and supportinga card.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line IIII of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged: detail view of'one of the quadrats.
In Figs. 1 and 2, I designates the platen and 2 the tympan or cover of paper or cloth thereon. Each of thequadratscomp-rises a body portion 3 having, a central recess 4 in which is loosely fitted a millednut 5. A head member 6 is rigidlymounted on one end of a screw-threaded pin 7 which passes loosely through the body portion 3 about centrally oft-he recess 4: and operatively engages in the nut 5. Rotation of the nut will,
therefore, move or adjustthe screw rod. or I Gopies of this patent m beobtained m r 'specificationof lietters Patent.

the screw pin outside of the body portion 'andacts as a lock for holding the pin in adjusted position by being turned up against said body. a
The body portions of the quadrats are de: signed to be glued or otherwise secured to the face of the tympan 2 as illustrated in In orderto insure the head pin '7 an dhead 6 with'respect to thebody member 3.. -Another nut '8 is mounted on the card 10 from working down between said head and tympan, a thin flangeor lip 12 isformed on said head projecting therev from and is inserted inaslit 11, Fig. 2, in"
The quadrats are preferably used in pairs,
as shown in Fig. 1 so that'one end of the card 10 1nay be raised or lowered with respect to the other in order to bring the/card as a ,wholein' proper parallel relation to the type .(not shown). More orless of the quadrats may, however, be used asmay be necessary or desirable without departing from thisinvention- Y j 7 Having thus described my invention, what I I claim as new and desire to secure "by Letters Patent of the United States is:-
1. In a device of the character described,
the combination with the tympan of a print ing press platen, said tympan having a .slit 7 therein,v of a card supporting, device comprising a body portion secured to the tympan, a head for engaging the card, said head having a fiangeextending its full width and engagingthe slit in thetympan sothat the outeredge of said flangeis covered by saidtymp'an, and means foradjusting the head with respect to the body. i 1
2. In a device of the characterdescribed,
the combination with a tympan of a print- "ing press platen, said tympan having a slit v therein, of a card-supporting device comprising a body portion secure'd'to the tyme pan, ahead forengagingthe card, and a" flange extending the full "width of the :head
and engaging the slitin the tympan so that the outer edge of said flange lsicoveredfby said tympan. means for gradually: moving the head with respect to the body for making fine adjustments, and means for locking said headin adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my nanie to this specification.,
' ANTHONY soarrocnio.
