PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK S. BUCKMINSTER, OF PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
EXERGISING DEVICE.
Application filed June 22, 1926. Serial No. 117,716.
This invention relates to an exercising device.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved exercising device of cheap, simple and durable construction which may be readily mounted upon a door frame in a dwelling house, so that a person may exer- "isc himself thereon in the doorway.
Another object; of this invention is to provide a device which is readily adapted to be used for exercising purposes by persons of different heights, such as the differ cut members of a family.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device enabling persons to exercise themselves thereon which adapted to be mounted upon the door frame and which when not in use will not interfere with the closing or opening of the door.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be made n'ianifest in the 'l'ollo'winp detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view illustratinc a door frame and the improved exercising device mounted thereon, the exercising, device being shown as completely assembled.
Fig. 2 is a partial perspective view illustrating a detail of construct-ion,
Fig. 3 is a vertical section illustrating a slightly modified form of attaching construction, and
l i g'. 4 is a perspective view illustrating a moditi-ed seat construction.
Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designatc similar parts throughout, the in'iproved exercising device consists of two mounting members 10 which may be formed of strap iron or the like and which are preferably bent angular in form. They are adapted to be positioned against the top of a door frame with the horizontal portion of each member indicated at 11 restin on top of the door frame which projects slightly from the plaster. The vertical portion of each member It) fits against the face of the door frame and top thereof, and suitable nails or screws can be driven through apertures in these two portions of each member to rigidly fasten them to the top of the door frame. in the lower ends of each of the up per portions there are formed apertures,
through which the upper ends of rods 12 extend. in this manner the rods are pivotally connected to the mounting members 10. Each rod has a handle 13 secured centrally to the rod adjacent its lower end. The handles may be formed of wood and are preferably cylindrical in form with the lower end of its rod extending through it and having a nut and washer positioned on the rod against the under side of the handle.
The above mentioned construction may serve as an exercising device for a relatively tall person. such as the father in a family. He can grasp the handles 13 and raise himself from the floor, such as in chinning. and may also eXercise himself in other manners.
To provide for exercise of a person somewhat shorter, such a large boy, a second pair of rods is provided. These are indicated at 14 and have on their upper ends hooks, provided by bending the rod rearwardly, as at 15, laterally as at 16, forwardly as at 17, and downwardly as at 18. These hooks which are formed upon the upper ends of the rods 14 are adapted to hook about the rods 12 and rest upon the handles 13. Each of the rods 14 has a handle 19 provided upon its lower end which is similar in construction to the construction of the handles 13. In this manner the handles 19 are supported in such position as to be readily grasped by a comparatively short person. The handles 13 and 19 when employed are adapted to be used by a man or a boy in a somewhat strenuous exercise.
The device also provides for lighter exercise desirable by infants, and to this end a third pair of rods 20 are provided. The rods 2t) have hooks 21 formed on their upper ends which are similar to the hoolzs on the upper ends of the rods 11. 'ihrsc hook are adapted to hook over the rods 14' and rest on the handles '19, or, if desired. they ma) be caused to hook over the rods 12 and rest on the handles 13. Eyes 22 are formed upon the lower ends of the rods 20 and chains 22; are fastened to these eyes. Straps or st ips of webbing 21 are provided which have lhcir upper ends provided with snap hoot-1s or the like, indicated at 25. adapted to enga g any of the links of the chains 23. A scat provided consisting of a transverse section of strap iron 26 having its ends bent upwardly and apertured to receive snap books 27 on the lower ends of the straps ill. (in top of the section of strap iron 26 a board. or the like indicated at 28 is secured. In this way a swing is provided which can be adjusted by the engagement between the hooks 25 and the links of the chains 23, enabling an intantto use the complete device as a swing, gaining considerable exercise which is not as strenuous as that which is apt to be gained on using the handles 19 or 13.
In the event that the infant is quite young. so that there is danger of his falling out of the swing, a seat is provided as shown in Fig. 4. having a rectangular frame 29 to which is fastened a fabric bag or basket 31) having leg holes til. Smtable straps 252 which have hooks 3? thereon are adapted to be l'astcned to the lower ends of the chains 23. In this way a very 1lltlll child can use the complete construction.
In the event that the top of the door 'lrame not .fiat. as shown in Fig. 1. but has an ornamental molding M, as shown in Fig. 35, the members 10 instead of being angular in form are hooked. as indicated at 11?. so that the members may be attached to the door frame and in no way interfere with or Inar the molding )1.
From the above described construction it will be readily appreciated that an improved exercising device is provided of cheap, simple and durable construction, which enables the various members of a family or persons of ditlcrent heights to exercise themselves in a satisfactory manner.
it will be understood that various changes in the detail of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention defined by the appended claims.
1 claim:
1. An exercising device comprising a pair of members each adapted to be attached to the top of a door frame or the like, a rod for each member pivotally connected thereto and depending therefrom. a handle for each rod. each handle being secured centrally lo the rod at its lower end, a second pair of rods, each rod having a handle secured centrally thereto at the bottom of the rod and having a hook formed upon its upper end adapted to hook about the lower ends of the first mentioned rods over their respective handles, a third pair of rods having their upper ends provided with hooks adapted to hook about the lower ends of the second pair of rods over the handles thereon, and a seat supported between the lower ends of the third pair of rods.
2. An exercising device comprising a pair of members each adapted to be attached to the top of a door frame or the like, a rod for each member pivotally connected thereto and depending therefrom. a handle for each rod, each handle being secured centrally to the rod at its lower end. a second pair of rods, each rod having a handle secured centrally thereto at the bot-tom ot the rod and having a hook formed upon its upper end adapted to hook about the lower ends of the tirst mentioned rods over their respective handles, a third pair of rods having their upper ends provided with hooks adapted to hook about the lower ends of the second pair of rods over the handles thereof, the lower ends of the third pair of rods being provided with eyes, a seat consisting of a section of strap iron having its ends bent upwardly and provided with hooks adapted to enter the eyes, and a board secured to the section of st 'ap iron.
3. An exercising device comprising a pair 01 members which are adapted to be attached to the top of a door frame or the like, a rod for each member pivotally connected thereto and depending therefrom, a handle for each rod, each handle being se cured centrally to the rod at its lower end, and a second pair of rods, each rod having a handle secured centrally thereto at the bottom of the rod, said rods having hooks formed on their upper end, said hooks having an olf-set portion, thereby enabling them to be hooked about the lower ends of said lirst mentioned rods and to rest upon theIr respective handles.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
