Description

May 17, 1927- H. E. HUBBARD INDEX TAB Filed July 10, 1926 EGG MHJ QAQIIHS Patented May 17 1927.
UNITED STATES 1,629,033. PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. HUBBARD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AD D RESSOGRAPI-I COM- IPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
I INDEX TAB.
Application filed. July 10, 1926. Serial No. 121,651.
This invention relates to that class of printing devices comprising a metal plate c for receiving and holding detachable index tabs and examples of the devices are shown in Letters Patent of Joseph 'Duncan No. 1,015,757 and No. 1,015,758, January 23, 1912; and No. 1,082,505 and No. 1,082,506, December 30, 1913; and No. 1,390,026, September 26, 1921.
The object of this invention is to provide a printing device having provision for the use of one or more detachable index tabs and also having a permanent pivoted switch tab adapted to be moved into a plurality of adjusted positions for effecting different operations and results.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a selected embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a printing device embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a fragment of the printing device.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line k1 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the switch tab.
Referring to the drawings, the printing device 5 is preferably formed from sheet metal and it is provided with type characters stamped in relief on a section 6 to print an address or other matter. The section 6 is located at the lower portion. of the device and is preferably depressedas provided for in the patents herein referred to. Above the type section 6 there is a raised panel 7 provided with openings in its upper and lower wall which are alined to form keeper slots 8 adapted to receive the stem 9 of detachable index tabs 10. The left end portion of the panel 7 is not provided with the keeper slots 8 but is pro-vided in its upper wall with an elongated slot 11 to receive the switch tab 12 which is made in the form of a straight bar and is pivoted at 13 to the panel 7 above the lower wall thereof, this lower wall being solid and unbroken at the left end portion of the panel where the switch tab is located. The switch tab is adapted to be swung on its pivot 13 in the slot 11 and in an are limited by the ends of the slot. The panel has depressions on its face forming raised portions 14 on its back, and a long depression on its face forming a longitudinal raised portion 1 1 on its back, to assist a card 15 in clearing the switch tab when it is inserted endwise through the end slot 5 of the panel. 'The switch tab is provided with a projection 16 between'it's ends adapted toengage one of the openings 16 in the panel to hold the tab in adjusted position.
The card 15 is arranged at the back of the .an opening 13 in the panel 7 and is riveted on said panel to secure the tab pivotally to the plate.
My invention provides a permanent switch tab of simple and substantial construction which can be adjusted to enlarge a classification, to indicate certain specific conditions, or to operate the selector mechanism of the printing machine, whereby a single impression is taken or a plurality of impressions are taken from the printing device, or the device is causedto travel through printing position without an impression being taken therefrom. The projecting portion of the switch tab may be colored, if desired, and by the position to which-it is adjusted it may furnish information desirable in a classification system. The construction of the tab and the manner in whichv it is fastened to the printing device is substantial in through said slot, the lower end of said tab being pivotally engaged with the printing device and the upper end of said tab projecting above the upper edge of the printing device, said tab adapted to swing from end to end of the slot in the printing device, and means for holding the tab in adjusted position.
A printing device having a slot adjacent its upper edge and an opening disposed below said slot and substantially midway between the ends thereof, a switch tab projecting through and above and below said slot, a collar formed on the switch tab at the lower end thereof, said collar being received in said opening in the printing device and riveted on said device to pivotally secure the tab to the device, and means for holding the tab in adjusted position.
3. A printing device comprising a metal plate having type characters stamped in relief on the lower section thereof and a panel raised above said type characters, the upper and lower walls of'said panel for a part of. its length being provided with alined keeper slots to receive a detachable tab, an elon gated slot in the upper wall of the panel ad acent said keeper slots, a switch tab projecting through said elongated slot and pivotcd at its lower end to the panel at a point below the elongated slot and n'iidway between the ends thereof, said switch tab projecting above the upper edge of the plate and adapted to swing in the elongated slot from end to end thereof, said tab being provided with an opening between its pivot and the elongated slot and said device being provided with a projection to engage said opening for holding the tab in adjusted position.
A printing device having a raised panel open at one end and having a slot in its upper wall, a switch tab pivoted to the back of said panel and projecting through said slot, means at the back of the panel and at the edges thereof for holding a card in the panel, and raised portions in the panel adjacent the tab to enable a oardto clear the tab.
