v This invention relates to composite mine cars and has as an object to provide an iinproved iniiie car of the type specified having a wood center floor portion and wood sides, metal side floor portions and metal 'reinforcing at the junction of the sidev floor portions and the wood sides. It is also an object of this invention to provide flanged sills formed integral with the side floor portions and journal boxes shaped to lit vthe sills and which will reinforce the sills, directly support the sill flanges andaid in supporting the side floor portions.
With these and other objects in view a mine car constructed `in accordance with this invention comprises, as shown in the flanges drawings, metal plates l forming the side floor portions of' the car and having their inner edges bent to form flanged sills 2 with downwardly projecting vertical webs 3 and inwardly projecting bottom flanges 4. The outer edges of the plates 1 are bent to lie in a plane lparallel with and slightly above the plane of the body of the andare reinforced by angles 5 having inwardly projecting flanges 6 riveted to the plates 1. and upwardly projecting flanges 7.
To the lsills 2 are secured journal boxes 10 formed with Z-shape portions which fit the sills 2 and flanges 11 secured to the bottom flanges 4 of the sills 2 by bolts 12 and 134 securedby bolts 14 to tlie plates 1 so that the sill flanges and side floor portions are directly supported on the journal boxes. Mounted in the journal boxes 10 are axles '15 having wheels 16 secured thereon, the top portions of the wheels being accommodated inA openings 17 formed in the plates 1 and covered by flanged curved wheel hoods 18 which extend at uniform height to the outer edges of the plates 1 and haiie their outer edges reinforced by the an gles 5 which are bent to conform to. tne shape of the outer edges of the wheel hoods plates Application led June 15, 1925. Thus the reinforcement of the outer lwheel hood edges and of the side floor plates 1 is continuous at the junctions of the hoods 18 with said plates 1, where it is particular ly needed, and is independent of the car sides. i flanges secured by rivets 19 to the plates and by bolts 14 to the plates 1 and the flanges 13 of the journal boxes 10.
At the outer edges of the side floor portions are mounted longitudinaly extending planks forming wood sides 20 which have their lower edges gained to receive the vertical flanges 7 of the angles 5, the lowermost planks being cut awa to conform to the shape of the wheel hoo s 18. The sides 20 are supported at regular intervals from end to end of the car by braces 21 secured to the sides by bolts 22. Extending between the plates 1 are ties 31 which rest upon the planks 28 and buder beam 25 and are secured to the planks by the bolts 29 and to the plates 1 by rivets32.
The bufferbeam 25 and adjacent planks 28 project at the car ends and are provided with bumpers 34 comprising top plates 35 and bottom plates 36 spaced therefrom and joined thereto by curved end plates 37, the top plates 35 and bottom plates 36 covering tlie projecting ends of the planks 28 and buHer beam 25 and extending inwardly as far as the inner edges of the end braces 21. rlhe bottom plates 36' are spaced from the bottoms of the planks 28 and buffer beaiii bers having their outer ends spaced fromy the to'p plates 35 of the bumpers 434 to provide openings to receive the usual coupling links, the coupling members 40 and bumpers 34 being provided with alined openings to receive the usual coupling pins 41.
The car body is closed at one end by a swinging end gate 43 carried by arms 44 pivotally mounted at `45 on the sides 20 of .the car While the other end of the car is closed by a fixed end 46 secured to the car sides and floor. Mounted in brackets 50 secured to the flanges 4 of the sill 2 is a shaft 51 having crank arms 52 pivotally connected to ends of flexible brake bands l, 54 which have their other ends connected to brackets 55 secured to the adjacent braces 21 and platesl. At one end the shaft 51 is provided with a crank arm 56 ivotally connected to one end of a link 57 th) is pivotally connected to a brake operating 'lever 58.pivotal1y mounted at 59 in a bracket 60 carried by the adjacent plate 1. The brake lever 58 projects upwardly through an opening in the plate 1 and has its upper end bent outwardly to provide av handle 61 which projects over the car side, the car lever. It Will'be noted that the central portion of the floor is supported upon the lower flanges 11 of the journal boxes and between the upper portions-of such journal boxes, to the upper flanges 13 of which the side floor portions 1 are connected. The journal boxes, it
will be noted, have supporting flanges or- Iand journal boxes supporting said sills.
