to be a full, clear, and` exact descrip?" tiont ereof. L
This invention relates to mine and similar cars, and more especially to the 'body porthe characters ecifxe in details hereinafter describedand c aimed, and particularly with aview of forming alight, strong body and vone having a minimum number of parts and a minimum number of riveted joints.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is in part'a plan view and in parta horizontal The object is to improve bodiesfof cars of part 'a side view and in part a vertical longitudinal section' on the line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. '3 1s an end view; Fig. 4 1s a transverse sectin on the line 4 4, Fig. 1; Fi 5 is a perspective view of an end of the si e plate f ig'. 6 is a similar view of a portion of the bottom plate; and Fig. 7 is a detailed view showing a` modified corner section between the side and bottom plates. v
The body of myimproved car comprises two side plates 1, a bottom plate 2, end plate 3, and an end door 4. The side plates extend distance, as at 5 and then flare outwardly,
down in between the wheels and at the uper portion overhang the wheels to provi e arge ca acity'. These side plates have their lower e ges flanged inward y, as at 8, said flanges underlying the edges of the floor plate and being secured thereto bysuitable means, such as the rivets shown. .The upper edges of' 'the side plates are flanged outwardly, as at 9, to give 'lateral stiffness, and the end flanges of said plates .arealso flanged 10. The latter preferably are wider at their lower ends than at their upper, as shown' in Fi s. 3 and 4,'and project down somewhat; be ow'the lloor plate, as at 11, this being effected by suitably cuttin the blanks Aso rojecting part is formed. The floor plate the central portions of its ends projecting,
said plate. are bent or flanged downwardly.,
as at 13, to form transverse stilleners which.; i
are, effect, end or buffer sills. These end flanges 13 are of increasingdepth toward their ends, 'as shown in Fig. 3, and they ex- -tend sidewise beyond the edges of the .body
`of' the floor, as at 14, said projecting ends overlapping the 'downwardly projecting endsy l e vertical endflanges of the side 11 of t plates and being directly secured thereto, as y" means of rivets v15. This gives a very 'simpleand strong connectionl ati the lower 'corners of the body.
The Xed end late Sat its upper edge is flanged outward y, as at 16, to stillen the same and at its lower edge is flanged in- Vwardl' as at 17, said flanges `bein-g riveted direct y to the floor plate. The side edges of the end plate are riveted directly to the vertical'end flanges 10 of the side plates. At thev to rivete to the out-turned top flanges 9 of the corners flanged angle plates 18 areA side plates and top flanges 16 of the end .l
shown in Fig. 2 in order to recoive'a coupling member between said end and the'projecting part of the floor plate. The strap 22 is provided with a hole 2,3 and the floor plate and buHer member 19 are provided with ahole 24 in alinement with the hole' 22 in order to receive thecoupling pin, or other draft meni- `ber. v
The door 4 is" formed of a flat plate cut to the sha e of the end of the body and of: a size lto over ap the out-turned end ilanges ,1() of the side lates.. The upper edge of the door is flange outwardly, as at 25, to stillen the4 y. same, and itsvslde and bottoni-edges are stillened by having'rivoted to ils outer face the anglebar 2 6, although if desired this may be effected by' other moans. The door is proyvided with hinge straps 2T whose eyes are journaled on a transverse rod or shaft 2S Vmounted at-its ends in bearing members 29 secured tn the upper forward corners of the as ai 12, toiorm buflers.
