My invention relates to railway dump car construction, and more particularly to the construction of dumping door' bracing and door operating means cooperating therewith.
It is a particular object of my invention to provide improved door bracing and supporting means for a dumping door whereby the number of parts will be reduced and greater rigidity obtained.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an improved door beam member such as will provide for economical distribu- 'tion of metal.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a cast metal beam member which will incorporate in one piece bracket means for accommodating removable load diverting means for V the purpose of enabling the economical adaptation of the car to ballast- 2 ing service.
Another object of my invention is to provide improved shaft rotating means for receivin a removable operatingbar to provide safety and convenience tothe operator in the manipulation of the car doors.
My invention resides in certain features of construction and details of parts such as will hereinafter be more fully pointed out and claimed. n
For turthercomprehension of my invention reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the lower portion of a so-called W-type hopper showing so much of the car as necessary to illustrate my improvements incorporated therein;

Referring more particularly to the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive, the car broadly includes a centersill. structure A, side walls BB, and dischargehoppers on each side of the centersill structure, each of said hoppers being defined by inner and outer walls G and D, respectively, and transversely extending walls E and F, respectively, said walls being inclined lengthwise of the car. Each hopper is provided with a discharge opening adapted to be closed by a dumping door G. The doors on the respective hoppers are disposed in transversely aligned relation, and united at their free edges by a beam member H which extends across the plane of the centersill. Each door is pivotally mounted on pivots J adjacent its upper margin on a'combined brace and hinge member K. Intermediate the pair of spaced doors and cooperating with the door beam H, there is'disposed door operating and locking erated by means of a shaft M, the latter having shaft rotating and locking means N means L which'is op identified therewith and disposed adjacent the car side.
Inasmuch as each door of the pair is of similar formation, the description hereinafter following will be confined to one door. Each door G is formed of metal presenting a substantially fiat and smooth main body portion 10, said door being rigidified adjacent its marginal edges as indicated at l1, 12, 18 and 1%, respectively. The door on its underside is provided with the usual hinge straps 1515 each cooperating with hinge lugs 1616 formed integrally with the hinge member K, said lugs being adapted to receive the door pivots J.
The door G extends slightly beyond the inner face of the hopper bottom and side walls for the purpose of providing a bearing between the door surfaces and hopper walls, the inner hopper side wall C being deflected inwardly as at 7 thence outwardly to provide a shoulder 18 in engagement with the floor surface of the door. The outer hopper floor sheet D is reinforced on its outer surface with an overlying rigidifying member 19 of appreciable width and flanged outwardly at 20 and 21, respectively, to present a channel. shaped section. The flange 21 is further flanged at substantially right angles to the door surface as indicated at 22, and the flanges 21 and 22 cooperate with the door to form a tight joint at the outer side of the door. The member 19 adjacent the upper portion of the hopper overlies and is riveted to a flange 23, the latter being formed integrally with the combined hinge and brace member K. At its lower edge the member 19 is flanged beneath the bottom hopper floor sheet as indicated at 24, and overlying the said flange 2a is the reinforcing angle member 25 which extends from side to side of the car and ties together the pair of transversely aligned hopper sections.
The beam or bottom member H which connects the respective doors GG of the pair preferably consists of acast metal integral member formed with a flange presenting on opposite sides thereof attaching flanges 26 and 27 whereby the member is riveted to the under side of the door. Adjacent the inner edges of the doors the member is depressed as indicated at 29 to provide an elfset construction with. respect to the edge flanges 12 of the doors. Outstanding from said flanges 26 and 27 the beam is provided with a web-like body portion 30 which is deflected from a normal or right angular position with respect to the main body portion of the door for the purpose as will be hereinafter described. The outer portion of the web '30 is provided with a reinforcing marginal flange 31 of bulb-like formation. The beam H intermediate the doors is of appreciable depth and gradually reduces in depth towards its outer ends, thereby providing a fishbelly formation. Intermediate the pair of doors the body portion 30 is formed with an enlarged portion 32 having an elongated circular opening 33 formed therein which extends substantially in the direction of the web and is formed intermediate its end with a non-circular recess 34 for the purpose of accommodating a nut 35. The opening 33 is adapted to receive the threaded shank 36 of door operating mechanism eyebolt 37. The recess 3% provides a snug fit for the nut 85 and maintains the same against both lengthwise and turning movement.
Connecting with the eyebolt 37 is the door operating mechanism L which includes an arm 38 rigidly mounted upon the shaft M, said arm being in turn pivotally united as at 23 with a rigid link member l0. The pawl 46 is limited in itsmovement in a locking direction by an abutment portion 62 formed integrally with the bearing bracket member re, said pawl member being also formed with a weighted portion 6-3, Fig. 2, which forms a convenient handle for displacing the cam 47 from its locked position. The spacing of the teeth 53 and 5 1 is such as to provide for adjustably controlling and maintaining he door in a primary open position and a secondary open position whereby gradual control of the discharged material may be effected. The arrangement of the teeth provides for a large angular displacement indicated at 67 of the shaft during the opening of the door to the primaryposition, the position of the mechanism parts and door when opened being indicated diagrammatically at 68, Fig. 2. The angular displacement of the shaft during movement from the primary to the secondary position is considerably reduced as indicated at 69, Fig. 8,
although the door moves a greater degree during opening from the primary to the secondary position. The door and mechanism in the secondary position is indicated by dotted lines 70, Fig. 3. The wide angular movement through which the shaft moves during opening movement ofthe door from the finally closed to the primary open position is of advantage to the operator inasmuch as a certain amount of lifting effort is neces-.
sary to displace the mechanism from the tight center locked position.-
The operation of the structure is as'follows Assuming the mechanism to be inlocked position as shown in Fig. 2, the operator first disengages the pawl 46, then inserts the removable bar 71, Fig. 2. The end'of thebar rests on the pocket 55 and bears on the outstanding projection 59. By rotating the bar in a clockwise direction, as indicated at 72,
the bar is gripped between the convex wall 58' and the projection 59 and the shaft and'bar then rotate in unison until such time as the that the concave wall 58 will move away fromthe bar and the convex surface 58 will move the bar outwardly, the bar will be automatically disengaged as the shaft overruns. Further, the beveled or wedge shaped formasideways outwardly, thus assuring a double factor of safety to the operator. To close the doors, the operator reverses the operation, in-
serting the bar 71 on the opposite side of the projection 59 in the manner indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6. The bar is gripped between said wall 57 and the projection 59, and by rotating the bar in an'anti-clockwise direction the door will be moved to fully closed position, the pawl 46 cooperating with the toothed element 45 during such rotation of the shaft.
In the construction shown in Figs. 8 to 10,
inclusive, the door beam is modified to include integral attaching means adapted to receive a removable diverting member. In said construction the hopper is indicated by inner and outer side walls 200 and 201, and a transverse- .tion 61 of the wall will operate to kick the bar ly extending bottom sheet 203. The dumping doors are indicated at 204 and the door brace at 205. The brace is provided adjacent each rail with a plurality of integral brackets 206 each including spaced walls 207, said walls depending from the underside of the beam. Pivotally mounted at 208 between each pair of walls is a link 209 and disposed on the hopper sheets 203 in alignment with said brackets 207 are brackets 210 each having links 211 mounted thereon. The links 209 on ito the door and links 211 on the car structure are 7 disposed in aligned relation, and mounted baffle plates 212, the said baffle plates extending above each of the rails 218 for the purpose of dividing the discharging loads to the opposite sides of the rails and maintain the rails free of the discharged load.
When the cars are used for ballast-in g, these plates and links are applied and may be conveniently removed when the car is returned to normal revenue services.

11 and 12, each car hopper is defined by inner and outer side walls as indicated at 300 and 301, respectively, and a transversely extending hopper floor sheet at 302. The inner hopper sheet 300 is flanged outwardly and thence downwardly as indicated at 304% and 805 to provide suitable abutment and sealing means for the door when in closed position. Each door 306 includes a body section 307 and inner and outer marginal flanges 308 and 309, respectively, and a flange adjacent the free edge of the door 810. The bottom beam in this modification preferably consists of a commercial bar section 311 having the upper flange 312 extending from one door to the other in one plane, the inner flange of the door and the inner hopper sheet being flared as indicated at 313 and 314-, respectively, at the intersection with the beam. The upper flange of the channel section 312 is cut away intermediate tl e doors for the purpose of accommodating a door mechanism eyebolt 315, the said eyebolt l eing provided with an elongated threaded shank 316, the axis of which extends at an angle to the outstanding web portion of the channel for the purpose of pro- 'iding a more direct pull on the eyebolt when the door is in closed position. Said eyebolt is retained in position by a nut 317 adapted to be maintaineo position by a bracket member 318, said bracket being provided with wall portions 319 and 320, respectively, secured to the upper flange and web of the channel, and in order to compensate for the cutaway portion of the upper fian 'e said member is extended for an appreciable distance to either side of the cut-away portion and se cured to the web and flange as indicated 821 and 322, respectively.
l/Vhile I have herein shown and described what I consider the preferred manner of car rying out my invention the same is merely illustrative, l contemplate any changes and modifications that may come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim 1. In ailway car, the combination of a dumping door, a door brace extending outwardly beyond aside edge of the door and including therein. a socket adapted to receive a threaded nien.be said socket having intermediate its end a pocket adapted to receive a nut for coopera' on with the threaded member, said pocket being adapted to hold the nut against lengthwise and rotary move ment; a door operating member rotatably mounted beyond the door; and a link connection between the shaft and the threaded member, threaded member and link being adapted when the door is in closed position to exert a substantially straight line pull on the nut.
2. In a railway car, the combination of a dumpling door, an operating saaft disposed beyond the door, a flanged beam member secured to the underside of the door by one of its flanges and having a web extending at an angle to the main olane of the door, bracket secured in the angle defined by said web and its flange and including an elongated opening having provisions intermediate its ends for receiving and maintaining nut against lengthwise and turning movement, said clon, 1ted opening extending at an angle to the web of the beam member, and connecting means from the said nut to the shaft.
3. In a railway car, the combination of a dumping door, a flanged beam member secured to the underside of the door, a rotatable operating member, connecting means extending from said operating member to the door, including eyebolt having a threadet shank ertendingthrough a cut-away portion in the flange of the beam member, and a bracket adapted to receive and adjustably hold the said eyebolt in a tilted oosition with reference to web of the beam member, said bracket being extended to either side of the cut-away portion in the flange and secured on either side thereof to compensate for the cut-away portion.
4. llna railway car, the combination of a dumping door, an operating shaft, connecting means from the shaft to the door, including a member having an elongated shank threaded to accommodate a nut, .51 flanged beam on the underside of the door having one flange secured to the door and having a web outstanding therefrom at substantially right angles to the plane of the door, a bracket carried by the beam, said bracket having an elongated opening adapted to receive the threaded member and dispose the same at an angle to the web of the beam, said elongated opening having intermediate its ends an open-ended recess adapted to receive the nut and maintain the same against lengthwise and rotary movement.
5. As an article of manufacture adoor brace for a substantially vertically suspended car door, said brace incorporating in an integral unit a flanged section for attachment to the car door, a reinforcing body web section outstanding from said flange section, and integral lug means forming a support for a removable ballast diverting member.
6. As an article of manufacture, an integral cast member adapted to be applied for bridging the space as a beam intermediate a pair of transversely aligned doors spaced from each other, said member including means for cooperation with door operating mechanism, and having formed integrally therewith a plurality of spaced bracket means adapted to provide means for suspending auxiliary load diverting means above the rails.
7. As an article of manufacture, a door brace adapted to extend outwardly beyond an edge of tie door and including a socket adapted to receive a threaded connection for cooperation with door retaining means, said socket including a pocket adapted to retain a nut intermediate its end for cooperation with a threaded connection, said pocket being adapted to retain the nut against lengthwise and rotary movement.
8. As an article of manufacture, an integral brace member for car doors, adapted to unite pair of transversely aligned doors spaced from each other a limited distance, said member being provided at a location intermediate I ig'eaegaee' the pairof doors with an opening'adaptedto accommodate an elongated door supporting connection having a threaded shank and a co-operating nut,- and havin a pocket intermediate the end of the opening for accommodat n said nut and maintaining the same" 0 against lengthwise and turning movement.
