One object of the invention is to provide a mine car that shall have a very low height to permit operation in mines having a low- Iheight seam and to lighten the labor of filling it and that shall have the floor thereof l below thewheel axles and housings over the axles so constructed as to enable the complete clearing of the material carried by the car when effecting the so-called end dumplIl 2(iAnother object of the invention is to provide a center bumper mine car that shall have plate girder side sills connected by ties which, below the wheel axles,v support a floor having a longitudinal buffer beam as a part thereof and that shall have a coupler member suitably connected to the buffer beam.
ln a mine car it is a very desirable feature to have the height thereof very low for service in mines where the coal seam is not very thick. Moreover, it is apparent a lowheight car materially lessens the labor of loading it and provides alow center of gravity so as to insure better operating qualities. A mine car constructed in accordance with this invention has the central fioor thereof positioned below the wheel axles and supported on the side sills and ties connected to the side sills.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, a mine car' is illustrated comprising wheels 1, which are mounted upon axles 2, and plate girder side sills 3 which/are mounted on 'journal boxes 4 carried by the axles 2. In Fig. 3' of the drawings the side sill 3 is shown provided with an inwardly extending bottom 192s. serial No. 100,872.
flange 5 and an outwardly extending top flange 6. To the bottom flange are secured the belts 7 by means of rivets 8. The belts 7 not only serve to connect the bottom flanges of the side sills but also serve as braces for the side floor sections and the side walls of the car.
A plate 9 is bent on each side of the car to form a side wall section 10 and a'.side floor section 11. The plate is connected to the top flange of the sill by rivets 12 and to the belts 7 by rivets 13. The side fioor section 11 is inclined from the top fiange of the side sill to a point beyond the wheels 1 and intersects the wheels, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Suitable openings are provided in the sloping portions of the side fioors to prevent interference with the wheels and hoods 15 are'provided Yfor covering the openings. The openings in the side fioors and the hoods are made of such size as to permit the removal of the wheels from any axle without disturbing the position of the axle. The portion of the side floor beyond the sloping sectionis formed horizontal and the portion 10 of the plate 9 which forms the side walls of the -cars is provided with a turned over part 16 at the top thereof. The belts 7 do not follow the contour of the side sills and side floors, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, but extend from the bottom' side sill flanges to a point along the inclined portion of the side floors 1l and then follow the contour of the side floors and side walls.
A longitudinal butter beam 17 having bottom fianges 18 thereon is carried by the belts 7 which serve as ties between the side sills 3. The flanges 18 of the buffer beam are secured to the belts 7 by rivets 19. The bop portion of the bilder beam is secured to the axle housings 20 by means of rivets 70. The axle housings extend between the side sills 3 to cover the wheel axles. The front portion 21 of each housing very closely follows the outline of the axle whereas the rear portion 22 thereof has a gradual slope downwardly to the floor as is indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, to insure the clearing of the material from the car when the rear end of the car lis elevated for dumping purposes. Between the housings 20 and the belts 7 on each side of the buffer beam 17 are mounted wooden planks 23 and 24. The planks 23 and 24 are cut away to accommodate the fianges 18 on the buffer beam and the bottom flanges 5 on belt 7 in place of a strip 26 as shown in Fig.
2 of the drawings. The rear flange of the front housing 20 is also connected by bolts 25 to a strip 26. ,Bolts 27 are also provided for connecting the strips 28 mounted on the central flooring and the belts which are located on each side of the forward wheel axle. The bolts 27 and 25 may be easily removed when it is necessary to renew the planking in the central licor.
In Fig. 9 of the drawing it will be noted the wheel housing 20 is provided with a iange 30 which is connected to the side sill by means of bolts 31 and 31a. The bolt 31a is set in a countersunk hole order to avoid interference with the journal boxes. When the faxle .housings 20 are constructed ,as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings, the side sills are not only connected by the belts below the iooring but are tied together by the axle housings above the iooring.
The frontl end of the car is provided with a door 32 mounted on brackets 33 and 34. The bracket 34 is secured to the bracket 33 and the bracket 33 is pivotally mounted on the side walls of the car by means of bolt's35 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. Each bolt 35 is supported on the side walls of the car by means of bracket 36 and one end ofja' belt 7. During the raising of the rear end of the car for dumping purposes the door 32 is swung upwardly. The rear end of the car is raised a height suiiicient to permit the carried q'material to slide freely over the axle housings.
A plate girder end wall 37 is formed at the rear end of the car. Such plate glrder end wall is shaped to conform to the outline of the lside walls and side sills of the car and is provided with a bottom iange 38 positioned above the bufer beam and the e 38 is connected to the belt 7 at the end of the car by means of the removable bolts 39. Flanges 40 are also rovided on. the end wall to engage the si e Hoor portions and the side wall portions of the plate 9. Such fianges 40 are connected to the end belt and the plate 9 by means of rivets.

A filler block 42 is mounted Vabove the ends of the planks and the ends of the b'uffer beam, as shown in Fig. 4 of the downwardly through a slot 47 formed in the top bumper plate 43 and a slot formed in the filler block 42 to the top of the buer beam 17 and is connected thereto by rivets 48. Suitable openings are provided in the coupler member 46, the plates 43 and 44 and the bui'er beam for the insertion of a coupling pin. In the construction above described the plates 43 and 44 of the bumper extend to the belt at the'end of the car but are not directly connected thereto. More over such plates 43 and 44 do not extend completely over the width of the. central floor, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings and removable bolts 49 are provided for connecting the lates 43 and 44 to the planks` of the central oor.
A sloping bumper sheet 52 extends over the filler block 42 at the door end of the car in order to insure clearing the careof the carried material during the dumping operation. The lower end of the sheet 52 is connected to the central floor by removable bolts 53. rIhe bolts 53 are secured to'a strip 54- positioned below the buffer beam and the floor planking. The upper end of the sheet 52 extends over the end of the iller board and is connected to an end belt 7 by means of removable bolts 55. A strip 56 below the end of the sheet 52 extends across the iiller block 42.
Referring to 7 and 8 ofA the drawings, a modified bumpe construction is il' lustrated. In the modified construction it will be noted-the portions of the bumper sheet 57-58, whichl are integral with the end sheet 59, extend over the belt 7 at the end of the car as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. Consequently the bolts 55 in such constructions also serve to secure the bumper plate portions 57 'and 58 directly to abelt 7. The top and bottom of the bumper plates 57-58 also extend across the planks of the central iooring as indicated in Fig. 8 of the drawings. A corner; of the lower plate (58. adjacent each side sill is cut away at 60 to receive the end portions of the flan es 5 on the side sills. End portions of the flanges 18 on the buffer beam 17 are cut away as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings and the bottom plate 58 is cut away as at 61 toI receive the anges 18 of the bu'er beam. wherein the side sill, the side loor portion and the side wall on each side of the car are formed from a single plate. In Fig. 6 like reference numerals have been used to designate similar parts to those shown in Figs. l to 5, inclusive. The single sheet 62 shown in Fig. 6 includes the side sill 3 which is integral with the side floor and the side walls l0. rlhe side sill is not provided with an upper top flange 6 as shown in Fig. 3. However, a bottom inwardly extending flange 66 is Provided.
Referring to the modification shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, a wooden side wall 63 is shown connected to the belts 7 by means of bolts 64. The side floor portions and side sills are similar in shape to the side floor and side sills shown in Fig. 6 and are formed from one sheet of metal. The sheet 65 forming the side floor portions and the side sills is provided with a bottom flange 66 similar to the flange 5 shown in Figs. 3 and 6 and is provided with a flange 67 extending back of the wooden side wall 63 and connected to the belts by the bolts 64.
lWhat is claimed is:
l. In a mine car, sills, wheel axles, ties between said sills, a longitudinal buer beam supported on said ties and located below the wheel axles, and coupler members connected to said buffer beam.
2. In a mine car, sills, wheel axles, ties between said sills, a longitudinal buffer beam supported on said ties and located below the wheel axles, and housings for the wheel axles above said buffer beam, said housings being connected to said sills.
3. In a mine car, sills, wheel axles, ties between said sills, a loor having a longitudinal buffer beam supported on said ties and locatedvbelow the wheel axles, coupler members connected to said buffer beam, and housings for the wheel axles, said housings having a gradual slope towards' one end of the car vfor preventing the housings interfering with the dumping of the car contents.
4. In a mine car, wheel axles, side sills having inturned flanges formed at the bottom thereof, ties between said sills, a floor` located below the wheel axles and mounted on said flanges and ties, a longitudinal buffer beam forming a part of said floor, and coupler members connected to said butler beam.
5. In a mine car, wheel axles, sills having flanges formed at the bottom thereof, ties between said sills, a floor located below the.
wheel axles and mounted on said flanges and ties, a longitudinal buffer beam forming a part of said floor, and axle housings mounted on the floor and connected to said sills.
6. 7. lIn a mine car, wheel axles, journal boxes, a plate sill mounted on the journal boxes on each side of the car, and having a bottom flange, a side floor, a side wall, a central floor mounted on said sill flanges below the wheel axles, a longitudinal buffer beam forming a part of said central floor and belts connecting the buffer beam, central floor, sills, side floors and side walls.
8. In a mine car, wheel axles, sills having bottom flanges, sloping side floors, side walls, a central wooden floor mounted on said sill flanges below the Wheel axles, and housings for the wheel axles secured to the sills.
9. In a mine car, wheel axles, sills having bottom flanges, sloping side floors, side walls, openings in each side floor for the tops of the wheels, a wheel hood for covering each of' said openings, a central wooden floor mounted on said sill flanges below the wheel axles, and housings for the wheel axles secured to the sills.
10. In a mine car, wheel axles, sill plates having bottom flanges thereon below the wheel axles, a floor supported on said sill flanges, and axle housings mounted on said floor and connected to said sills, said housings having a gradual slope on one side thereof.

14. In a mine car, wheel axles, sills, ties between said sills, flooring comprising a longitudinal buHer beam and wooden planks carried by said ties and sills below the wheel axles, ller blocks mounted on the flooring projecting beyond the car body, bumpers, and draw bar members projecting through the top of the bumpers and the filler blocks and connected to the butler beam.
15. In a mine car, wheel axles, sills having iianges belowI the wheel axles, ties connecting lthe anges on said sills, ioorin comprising alongitudinal buffer beain anv wooden planks on each side thereof, said .flooring beingcarried by said anges and ties below the wheel axles and axle housings carried by said iiooring and connected to said sills.
16. In a mine-car, wheel axles, sills having inwardly turned anges located below the wheel axles, ties extending between the flanges on said sills, a longitudinal central buffer beam having iianges connected to said ties, axle housings connected to the sills, and wooden Hooi-ing mounted on the ties below the housings and between the buier beam and the side sills, means xedly securing the ties to the sills and the buHer beam, and means detaehably securing the iiooring to the housings and ties.
