Description

l. M EY ER.
Box-Scraper.
Pate'nwd Apri| 27,1s75.
, fnf/@fors W L G UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
GUSTAVUS MEYER, OF QUINOY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO J ULIUS FRANKE, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOX-SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 62,568, dated April 27, 1875; application filed January 29, 1875.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvUs MEYER, of Quincy, Adams county, Illinois, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to devices which have been classified as box-Scrapers; and has for its object the production of an implement of improved construction, and, especially, one which, while readily operated with enhanced results, is cheap, durable, and easily kept in order. It consists of a frame of metal, shaped so that its sides form convenient handles, the lower surface of which is horizontal, and ar ranged to act in conjunction with a knife in a manner analogous to a smoothing-plane.
The details of construction and operation fully appear hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view, showing the frame with the position of the knife. Fig. 2 is an end view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the knife.
A is the frame of the device, which is of suitable size, and, preferably, of cast metal. It is constructed with the handles B, and its lower surface or base O is horizontal and smooth, the handles B iiaring upward and outward from the base, and provided with the hand-holds a. The forward part D of the frame A is inclined to the rear at an angle adapted to the offices of the planing-knife E. The knife E is secured in place by the clamp H, having the ledge L, the clamp being fastened by the screw I, the knife depending through the aperture K in the lower surface O.
A washer, M, may be employed to more completely effect the locking of the knife and clamp.
The knife E extends across the entire width of the lower surface O, and has one of its upper surfaces iile-cut to prevent its slipping. lts edge is beveled in a manner analogous to the knife of a plane, and operates in conjunction with the surface G, substantially the same as an ordinary carpenters plane.
' The construction, proportions, and shape of the different parts are shown with sufficient particularity in the drawings, and their simplicity is such that they may be readily made by any intelligent artisan therefrom without a more elaborate explanation.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The frame A, having the handles B and horizontal surface or base C, substantially as shown and described. l
2. The combination of the clamp H, having the ledge L, screw I, and file-cut knife E, with theinclined part D, substantially as specified, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in box-Scrapers, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 19t-h day of January, 1875.
