UNITED STATES JOHN S. COBRY, OF SAN PEDRO, CALIFORNIA.
VANITY CASE.
.Applicant-n med October My invention is a vanitycase or box, adapted to carry cosmetics and Various other articles and materials for personal adornment.
An object of my invention is the construction of a vanity case which may have compartments for loose powder or compacts, a place for one or more powder puffs, separated from the compacts and also having a place or receptacle for a lip stick holder and a perfume bottle.
A further object is to provide a holder contained in the case but maintained distinct therefrom so as to be free of any loose powder or the likethis holder being useful for the carrying of coins.
My vanitycase is preferably constructed circular 'in form and has a. mirror mounted in the lid with a springl clip adapted to hold a powder puff, handkerchief or the like. The diaphragm pivotally mounted in the middle portion of the case containsa lurality of compact holders, these holders iiave hinged lids and being removablev so that they may be replaced by other compact holders.
A further feature of the case is a receptacle adjacent the bottom adapted to contain a lip stick holder and a perfume bottle and forming compartments for a plurality of small powder puffs or the like.
A further feature of my invention is the provision of a sliding tray in the base of the holder, the action and opened by engaging the back of the tray through an opening in the base of the holder, the tray therefore being readily opened a suiiicient distance tc remove coins or the like and automatically retracting when the coins are withdrawn. v
My invention and the various features thereof will be more readily understood from the following description and drawin s, in which- Y igure 1 is a perspective view of my vanity case, looking at the inside of the case, showing the compartment in the base for a lipV stick holder and perfume bottle and powder puffs, the sliding tray in the base, the hinged diaphragm having the removable compact holders therein and the lid with a mirror and hook secured to, the lid.
Fig, 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the case 1n its closed position as if taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, with the diaphragm and lid closed down.
tray being retracted by spring' `27, 1925. Serial No. 65,126.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section of the hinged diaphragm with the removable compact holders therein, showing the support for a removable holder.
Fig, 5 1s a plan view of the slidable tray removed from the case.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the lip stick holder.
Fig. 7 is a lon itudinal sectionA of the lip stick holder, indicating a slidable support for the lip stick.
Fin. 8 is an end view of Figs. 6 or 7 in the direction if the arrow 8l The general features of my vanity case are shown particularly in Figs. l, 2 and 3, in which the base section of the case is designated by the numeral 1, having a lid 2 pivotally mounted on the base by a. hinge 3 and held in closed relation by a nub 4 on the lid and a corresponding socket 5 on the base, the lower edge of the rim' engaging a beading 6 on the base.
The lid has a metal strip 7 around'its edge, with a rim 8 engaging the mirror 9 and holding the same in firm position. A s rin hook or clamp 10 is secured to a wi ene( section 11 of the strip 7, preferably by means of prongs 12 extendng through the strip and clinched on the opposite side. This hook 10 is designed to press tightly against the widened section 11 and to be formed of resilient metal vin order to clamp articles firmly in position in the lid.
IThe manner of mounting the compact holders is substantially as follows:
A ledge 13 having an upturned flange Mis positioned inside the base adjacent the upper edge andv may be permanently secured to the base or entirely removable. I prefer a construction in which this ledge is removable but forms a tight fit withthe base. A diaphragm 15 is connected by a'hinge 16 to the ledge, the hinge preferably being secured to the back portion of the flan e 14. A frog 17 is secured to the front edge of the diaphragm and forms -a linger grip to hinge the said diaphragm upwardly. The frog is preferably secured to the diaphragm by a pair of pron s 18 extending through apertures in the 'aphragm, the prongs being clinched at the lower edge and by a pair of prongs 19 extending downwardly through to the apertures in the diaphragm and forming a guide for the diaphragm as hereinafter described.
The compact holders 20 are secured in openings 21 in the diaphragm, having partial downwardly pressed sections 22 with inwardly extending rims 23. Each of the compact holders comprises a base 24 and a lid section 25 secured to a hinge 26. The lid and the base are locked together by a nulo and socket arrangement or other suitable fastening. These holders are designed to contain cosmetics in a compact form, but may if desired be used for powdered cos` metics. They are readily removable and replaceable by other compact holders containing different kinds of powder or hard rouges.
The base of the vanity box has a false bottom 27 with a longitudinal circular bead 28 forming a narrow slot 29 at the lower portion of the bead. The bottom has downwardly extendin sides 30 and is opened at the front and ack. The flanges 31 are adapted to form a tight tit against the inside of the hase and extend only partially along the bottom 32 of the base, leaving a free s ace 33 for a lipstick holder and perfume Ibottle as hereafter described. If de sired, the false bottom ma be permanently secured to the base by soldering or the like, however, I prefer to have it formed with a tight fit so that the false bottom may be removed if desired.
A tray 34 has a covered section 35 at the inner end with an upwardly extending stud 36 secured to said covered section, this stud being adapted to engage one end of a compression spring 37, the spring being positioned inside the bead 28 of the false bottom and bearing at its other end against the front portion of the base of the vanity case.
The bottom 32 of the base has a cut out section 38 extending from the back of the case about one half way and the rear wall of the base has a cut out section 39. This forms an opening for the lingers to engage the back of the tray and shove the tra outwardly by pressing the spring 37. This tray may be used for holding coins and after extracting a coin closes to the position shown in Fig. 2.
The manner of utilizing my vanity case above described, it is believed will be aparent, however, it may be stated that the lid is secured by a type of fastener which will always maintain it closed and on bein opened up exposes the mirror and the hooli 10 mounted in the lid. The compact holders removably mounted in the diaphragm are then in convenient position for access, being preferably horizontal as the base of the box 1s held horizontal in the hand. I have illustrated two com act holders but one may be used or more than two if desired. The lids of these may be readil opened 'for access to the compacts and t e whole dinphragxn containing the compacts may be hinged upwardly, ex sing for use the powder puffs contained 1n the false bottom and the lip stick holder and perfume bottle.
The prongs 19 en age on opposite sides of the bead 28 and orm a guiding device for assuring proper fit of the dia hragm in opening an closing the same. e tra 34 may be readily projected as shown in Iig. l, y pressing the inner end through the openin s 38 and 39 in the hase.
In a dition to the vanity box I have developed a simple form of lip stick holder shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the holder being made of a strip of metal bent into the forni; of a cylinder 40 with a slot 41 adjacent the meeting ed es and with an outwardly turned edge 42. he strip of metal has two semicircular shaped p'ieces 43 and 44 at the base, these being bent over with a center section 45 engaging inside the section 44 and with two outer sections 46 engaging on the inside of thek section 43. The bent end 47 of the turned ed e 42 presses against the -oinin edge of tie sections 48 and 44 an hol s them in position. This forms a rigid type of cylinder without an soldering.
A small slidable hol er 48 has a tongue 49 extending outwardly and guided by the turning edge 42, whereby the lip stick may be spread lengthwise of the lip Stick holder. The cap 50 is provided with a slot 51 to engage over the edge 42.
This type of lip stick holder is of simple construction forming a device that may be constructed without the use of'solder by simply cutting the sheet metal to proper shape and bending the various elements in the desired relation.
The lip stick holder is indicated positioned in the false bottom by the vnumeral and the perfume bottle by thenumeral 61, this latter being of any suitable construction, preferabl a metal box suitable to hold a bottle. he portions of the false bottom designated 62 and 63 form a convenient place to hold small powder puffs or beads.
Although I have illustrated m case as for hand use, nevertheless provide small eyelets 64 to which a chain may be connected or attached. These eyelets are preferably made by utilizing a plate 65 with a series of prongs extending through the wall of the base and having a bent up meeting portion 66 with a ring 67 Secured therem.
It will be seen from the above description and illustration that my vanity case 1s of simple construction and may be utilized for a variety of purposes, holdin .cosmetics and the like and provides a slida le tray which may be utilized for dill'erent purposes. The structure may be considerably changed in shape and its general features to suit diervanity ent forms of ornamentation and sizes and may be otherwise altered without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the description, drawings and claims.
