Description

1. w. TURNER.
Paper-Box.
Patented April 27, 1875.
L, fl
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. TURNER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,508, dated Apxil 27, 1875; application tiled March 15, 1875.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JAMES W. TURNER, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes for Holding and Preserving Photographic Negatives and Pictures; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following speciiication and represented in the accompanying drawings. p
The boxes are generally to be made of pasteboard.
On J une 16, 187 4, Letters Patent No. 152,022 were granted to me on a box for the aforesaid purpose, such consisting not only of an outer case, but an inner one or drawer, provided with two bottoms, with a photographic-negative space between them, and an opening leading from such space through one side of the box, the said inner case being to slide endwise within the outer one. Such a box l have improved by making the inner case or drawer, not only with a chamber or space opening through one side or one end of it, as occasion may require, but with two other receiving cham bers or spaces arranged on opposite sides of the irst one; and, furthermore, I sometimes combine with a chamber otl the inner ease a cross guard piece or sheet to extend across it, in order to hold a picture or plate or a series thereof in place therein.
Figure l is a longitudinal section, and F10. 2 a transverse section, of my improved box. Fig. 3 is an edge view, and Fig. 4i a bottom view, of the inner case or drawer.
The outer case A I make open at either or at each end, as shown. The inner case B has, between its two bottoms, a b, a space or chamber, o, open at one side, as shown at d, and having, besides, two chambers, ej-one below and the other above the chamber o. One of such chambers ef has the guard or cross piece or sheet q projecting across it at and near one end of it, and parallel to the bottom of said chamber. This guard may extend wholly across the chamber from end to end or partially across it. Then extended wholly across it the guard should be hinged at one edge to the side or end ot' the chamber in order that it may be turned up or down, it' desirable. The intermediate chamber, opening through the side or end of the inner case or drawer, is to hold or preserve a photographic glass negative, each of the other chambers being for holding photographs or pictures from such negative for their preservation, or for their transportation in the mail. When the box has but one negative and one positive receiving chamber, as is the case with the box described in my said patent, a glass negative is not so well protected from being broken in transit through the mails or otherwise as when made with chambers arranged on opposite sides of the negative-chamber, Whether the outermost chambers be empty or either' or bot-h be charged with pictures or other matters. The negative-receiving chamber I usually provide with ledges l l, arranged across it at and near its ends, to support the negative and keep it from being rubbed by the next contiguous surfaces ot' the box.
I herein make no claim to a photographnegative protector-box having its drawer made with a single positive-receiving chamber and a single negativereceiving chamber, the latter being open at one end or side, as repre sented in my said patent.
I claim- Y As a new article of manufacture, the photograph positive and negative holder, having its inner case or drawer B made or provided with the three chambers e of, arranged as described, and with the intermediate chamber open at one end or side, as stated.
JAS. WV. TURNER.
