UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIGE.
WILLIAM F. SPRAGUE, OF vFOXBOROUGrI-I, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO lLEW'IS POND, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING STRAW BRAID.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,426, dated April 20, 1875; application tiled February 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. SPRAGUE, of Foxborough, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sewing Straw Braid; and I do hereby declare that the followin gis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had t0 the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a plan View of my manner of securing straw braid, and Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the .in the usual well-known manner, and of any suitable width. These strips are adjusted so that their edges are even, and passed through a common sewing-machine, which stitches together the edges, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, leaving the loops on the wrong side of the material, and exposing on the right7 side only the connecting portions of the loops.
The old mode of sewing braid was to lap the edges of the strips and stitch them together. This makes a very heavy article, and, owing t0 the lapping of the strips, a large quantity of the braid is wasted, or, in other words, a large quantity is used which is not exposed on the surface of the manufactured article.
By my improved method of sewing together the strips the entire surface of each strip is exposed, and the requisite stiffness is obtained.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, strips of straw braid sewed together by their edges without lapping, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
y WILLIAM F. SPRAGUE.
