IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,393, dated April 20, 1875; application led March 17,1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIEN LARRU, of the city, county,A and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Pen-Holders and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specifica tion.

My invention consists iu a novel construction of the inner and outer tubes of a penholder, whereby the pen may be readily ejected from the holder without straining or soiling the fingers.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved pen-holder, with a pen in place ready for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing' a pen in the` act of lbeing removed from the holder. Fig. 3 is a top view ot' the interior tube. Fig. 4 is an end view ot' the same. Fig. 5 is a top view ofthe exterior tube. Fig. 6 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of my improved pen-holder.

The portion A ot the holder may be made of wood, or any other suitable material, and of any ofthe usual forms. rlhe tubesB and Gare made of any suitable metal. The outer tube B is similar in general I'brm and appearance to those in common use. Near its longitudinal center, or slightly' toward the rear there# of, are two holes, b, opposite to each other,

for the reception ot' a pin, as hereinafter described.

On the upper side of the tube, between the hole b and the front or lower end, an indentation is made in the metal, forming a projection, bx, on the interior et' the tube. rlhe inner tube C is cylindrical in form, with its rear or upper end open, for the reception ot' the wooden part A, and its front or lower end of hemispherieal or approximate form, and split for the purpose of t'ormin g an elastic seat for the pen D. The split portion may be, in its front view, in the shape ot' a cross, as shown in Fig. 4, or ot' T-shape, as shown in Fig. S.

The cross-shape is found preferable in some cases, as it enables the tube to accommodate itself to pens of various sizes and curvatures.

In the upper and lower sides ofthe tube C, are two slots, cl c1, diametrically opposite Aeach other, and extending a distance about equal to one-fourth of the length of the tube,

more or less. In the upper side of the tube is a third slot, c2, which extends forward, and may terminate in one of the splits or openings in the rounded front end of the tube.

The outer tube is placed over the inner one, and the two are secured together by means of a pin, E, passing through the holes b b and the slots cl c1, as shown clearly in Fig. 6, the projection bX on the tube B working in the slot c2 in the tube C, and serving as a guide, both in the operation ot' attaching the tubes together, and also after they are so attached. The tubes are secured to the handle A by inserting the lower end thereof into the inner tube, in the usual manner.

In a pen-holder thus constructed, an elastic seat is provided, which will accommodate itselt' to pens of different sizes and lorms of curvature, and will hold the pen firmly in place.

The projection bX serves to prevent the pen from being' inserted too far between the tubes. By means of the piu E working in the slots c1, the outer tube is allowed to slide a certain distance back and forth on the inner tube.

Villien it is desired to remove a pen from the holder, the handle A is held in one hand, and with the other hand the outer tube B is moved forward, so as to slide on the inner tube when the projection b", engaging with the upper end ot' the pen, will force the pen from the holder in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2, thus enabling a person to remove the pen from the holder, without straining the fingers, or soiling the same.

After removing the pen, the outer tube is moved back to its former position, and is ready to receive another pen.

/V hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

rlhe outer tube B, constructed with the inwardly-extending projection bx, and provided with the pin E, in combination with .the inner tube C, constructed with the slots cI c1, within which the pin E is arranged, and the slot c2 within which the projection bX on the outer tube projects for disengaging the peu in the manner herein shown and described.
