NIGHT GOWN..
Application filed July 26, 1926. Serial No.`12 5,062.
The object of my invention is to provide a night gown having the desired fullness at the bust line in the front of the garment with a corresponding shortening of the garment at the front of the arm holes, thus providing a smoother and better fit under the arms and across the bust of the wearer of the garment, and also maintaining an even length at the bottoinof the gown and preventing sagging.
The invention consists generally in cut'- ting substantially V-shaped notches in the fabric extending diagonally upward toward the center of the garment at the front from a point in the lower half of the front portion of the arm holes, the lower side of the V-shaped notches being longer than the upper sides so that when the edges are drawn together and shirred or pleated, the requisite fullness for the bust will be obtained with a corresponding shortening of the edge of the garment at the front of the arm holes.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure l is a perspective view showing the position assumed by the garment over the bust of the wearer in a sitting position;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the wearer of the garment in a standing position showing how the front of the gown will lie smoothly and evenly over the bust without any undue fullness at the arm holes;
Figure 3 is a plan view showing the V-A shaped notches cut in the goods and extending inwardly from the arm holes toward the center front line of the garment and also showing the lower edges of these notches longer than the upper edges;
Figure 4 is a view showing the edges of the V-shaped notches drawn together and shirred or pleated, thereby providing a fullness across the bust portion of the garment.
In the drawing. 2 represents a suitable fabric having shoulder bands 3 and arm holes 4. The front edge of each arm 'hole has a V-shaped notch 5 cut therein extending inwardly and upwardly toward the center line of the front of the garment as indicated in Figure 3. These notches are formed by cutting out gores of the garment from the edge of the arm holes and when these gores are removed the upper edge of each notch will be shorter than its lower edge and when these edges are, drawni together and shirred or pleated as indicated at 6in Figure 4, the front edge of' eacharm..
hole will" necessarily be shortened andl a certain degree of fullness will be provided in v the front of the garment to allow it to fit smoothly vover the bust of the wearer and prevent sagging of the garment at the bottom. When the garment is made of aV knitted silk fabric, the drawing of the edges of Ythe V-shaped notchestogether will produce the desired fullness and as illustrated in Figures l and 2, the fabric is so soft and yielding that it will fit over and around the bust without substantially any appearance of wrinkling and the shortening of the front edge of the arm holes will serve to draw in the garment at this point and cause it to lit more smoothly under and around the arms than usual in garments of this kind where generally an increase in fullness of the front of the garment to accommodate the bust results in a corresponding undesirable fullness or looseness under the arms. With my improvement, the desired fullness for the bust is obtained and at the saine time the garment is fitted under the arms `more perfectly than usual in garments of this kind.
I claim as my invention:
l. A ladys garment having shoulder bands and arm holes, gores being removed from the front of the garment on each side to provide substantially V-shaped notches extending inwardly and upwardly from the front edges of the arm holes, the upper edges of said notches being shorter than their lower edge whereby when the edges of the notches are drawn together and shirred or pleated, the desired fullness for the bust p0rtion of the garment will be obtained with a corresponding shortening of the front edge of the arm holes, to maintain an even edge at the'bot-toin of the'garment and prevent sagging.
2. A night gown composed of knitted fabric having shoulder bands and arm holes, the front of the `garment having substantially V-shaped notches cut therein extending from the front edges ofthe lower portion of the arm holes inwardly andv upwardly drawn together and shirred or pleated whereby the front edge of the arm holes will be shortened and a corresponding fullness will be formed at the front of the garment over the bust of the wearer.
3. A method of providing requisite bust fullness in a ladys garment which consists in cutting substantially V-shaped notches inwardly and upwardly from the Jfront edges of the arm holes and removing a triangular gore, thereby making the upper edges of the notches shorter than the lower edges and then drawing the edges together and shirring or pleating them to shorten the front edges of the arm holes, provide fullness at the bust point, and preserve an even hem line.
4. A ladys garment having shoulder bands and arm holes, the front of the garment having slits cut therein extending from the front edges of the lower portion of the arm holes inwardly and upwardly toward the conter line of the garment, the edges of the slits' being drawn together and shirred or pleated whereby a fullness will be formed at the tront of the garment over the bust of the wearer.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 23rd day of July 1926.
